Pleeease let it be true...</p> <p>May God forgive me, but I once saw Jim Davidson live. It was about five years ago, when I was in Wolverhampton for two nights on business. (Yeah, yeah, but it's not quite that ghastly - I stayed there because I was at a show in Telford, which is infinitely worse.) Anyway, I took what I could get entertainment-wise, which was Martin Stephenson (ex-Daintees) in a pub - excellent - then Mr Davidson.</p> <p>It was mainly out of curiosity, wanting to see if he really was that awful. After all, someone who has had a 40 year career in comedy must be able to make some of the people laugh some of the time, right? Well, he really was that awful. Corny, unfunny material (at least Bernard Manning had lethal delivery as a gag teller) and a staggering lack of self-awareness. (Sample, paraphrased from memory: "People think I've got something against shirtlifters. I've been in showbiz all my life, I've got lots of shirtlifter chums. And shirtlifter's a pretty mild way of putting it, considering what happens after the shirt is lifted...").
