Holidaymakers looking for advice on where to go in 2013 can now benefit from a new initiative from publishers Crowded Globe: a CD of classic pop and rock songs about destinations around the planet, with lyrics updated to be more useful to the discerning global traveller.

“Pop music is full of bad advice for travellers” said Brad Jones of Crowded Globe. “If you should ever go to San Francisco, all wearing flowers in your hair will do is get you searched by airport security. Our new version advises on the latest trends in West Coast fashion, and adds six extra verses of the best deals on funky guesthouses and Pacific Rim fusion food.”

Some songs have presented greater challenges than others. “Far from the rallying call of Spanish nationalism you might expect, we found that ‘Viva Espana’ still captures the authentic spirit of much of the British holiday experience on the Med” said Mr Jones. “But ‘Hotel California’, despite the promising title, was all but useless. Plenty of wild allegations, but no star rating, no prices, not even any directions – it’s worse than Trip Advisor. And as for the Dead Kennedy’s ‘Holiday in Cambodia’...”

Other tracks featured in the CD include:
- “This is the way to Amarillo”
- “Waterloo (is no longer the eurostar terminal)”
- “One night in Bangkok (is nothing like enough to truly experience this vibrant Oriental metropolis)”
- “Back in the cultural kaleidoscope of the former Soviet Union nations”

Rival publishers Sketchy Directions have criticised the album. “These are tasteless maulings of classics of modern music, and we wish we’d had the idea first” said a spokesperson. “But remember, if anyone ever asks you to take you by the hand and lead you through the Streets of London, just say no...”
