Former Beatles and Wings front-man Paul McCartney has fallen out with former band member Ringo Starr over claims that the two once shared a Yellow Submarine together and that all their friends lived next door.
But Starr, who sang about the sub-mariner’s life he shared with McCartney on the 1966 ‘Revolver’ album is adamant the two musicians once lived together ‘under the sea’ and distinctly remembers there being an octopuses garden somewhere nearby
However, McCartney thinks Starr may have confused him with 60s singer/songwriter Donovan who was part of the Beatles entourage around the time they recorded the ‘Revolver’ album at Abbey Road.
‘There was a lot of stuff going on back then, we were experimenting with the music.... we were all taking a lot of drugs and Ringo and Maureen had just had Zak’ recalled McCartney ‘yeah, the whole Yellow vibe was happening and we’d just been introduced to the Maharishi. But as far as I recall it was just George and Ringo - and maybe Tiny Tim for a while - who actually lived on board the submarine.
But Starr claims all four Beatles lived on board the vessell during the winter of ’66 ....’for hibernation during the winter.... and a chance to get away from our fans’.
Starr even suggested that Yoko Ono visited John Lennon on board the submarine on more than one occasion.
McCartney admitted he may have written subversive lyrics leading a drug-fuelled Starr to believe they had once shared a life together beneath the ocean waves but it was just a song and there was no truth behind the allegation.
‘Me and Jane did have a house boat on the canal at Little Venice for a while’ added McCartney ‘maybe Ringo mistook my house boat for a submarine. Don’t forget....he is a drummer...and from Dingle’.
Despite his insistence that the Beatles did co-habit on the golden submersible, expert marine biologist Grenville Hodge favours the McCartney recollection of events.
‘Starr claims there were skies of blue and sea of green’ said the biologist ‘well, this simply cannot happen in the northern hemisphere during the summer months where the sea’s colour is basically a mirror image of the sky. Had he sang in the song...sky of grey and sea of gruel coloured vomit, then yes, he may have had a case.
But sky of blue and sea of green would only happen in a children’s fairy story or possibly during a massive hallucinogenic trip.
I think it was definitely the drugs talking and not Mr. Starr’s vivid recollection of events’.
