Why not have a central depot where people have to keep their guns?
They can own as many as they like.
Like a gun bank.....where you have to draw your gun on a permit...not a 5 year old.
Guns outside the depot are considered illegal...therefore carry a severe penalty.
There....problem solved.

Sadly this is too close to the truth.
On the wireless this morning a gun shop owner in Texas seriously said that you can't stop bad guys getting guns so the solution was to arm the teachers. The way he said it, it sounded almost sane, but then he sells guns so it would be in his interest.

Teachers in American schools should routinely carry firearms so tragedies like the one at Newtown can be “nipped in the bud”, a pro-firearms spokesman said today. “If the teachers at the school where the tragedy took place were all carrying firearms they could have engaged in a traditional fire fight with the perpetrator, potentially with far less loss of life” said Senator Mike Adams, representing the National Firearms Association. The NFA is also calling for firearms training among the over eights, for similar reasons. “Let the teachers teach the children that owning and using a legally held firearm is part of the American tradition.”

“The school massacre is fast becoming an integral part of American life – a celebration of the freedom to bear arms secured by our ancestors hundreds of years ago,” Adams told a press conference. “What we need to do now is to restore the balance between the good guys and the mad guys, by making sure the good guys have the ability to defend themselves. And what better way to do that than to make sure they’re armed and ready with the very same weapons trained on their innocent foreheads?” Challenged about the extremity of suggesting eight year olds carry guns, Adams conceded there was a problem. “In these tough times, for some families the purchase of a shiny desirable new firearm for a child is simply unaffordable – we favour a charitable solution in the name of security for all children at risk. And we’re suggesting to the industry that affordable kiddie-guns – just as lethal as mommies’ and daddies’ automatic – be designed for this growing market”

Turning his attention to the media, Adams called for TV crews and reporters to be armed and prepared as well. “So often these guys are first at the scene, ready to report the latest brutal killing of some innocent little folk. Surely they should be prepared to shoot with guns as well as cameras, especially where police numbers are low. The All-American chaotic three sided shoot-out is as woven into the DNA of this great country of ours. Look at the TV ratings. Tarantino. It’s as American as apple pie, prom night and Guantanamo Bay. We need to make sure that when these traditional scenarios are played out in our schools, everyone involved can join in.”
