In the wake of UEFA's controversial proposal that the 2020 European Championship Finals could be staged in a number of countries throughout Europe, FIFA have now announced that the 2030 World Cup Finals are to be held in every country in the world.

"These will be the first truly global World Cup Finals", said Fifa President Sepp Blatter. "We at FIFA feel that there has been a long standing culture of discrimination and racism in only allowing one country to host the finals and the time has come for the whole thing to be made more inclusive."

The project was suggested and will be led by David Harbingson, a former top management consultant for a large American soft drinks company, who are widely tipped to be the main sponsor for the event. "We were thinking for ages about where these soccer finals should be held," he said. "Then, it suddenly hit us. The best place to hold the World Cup finals was, of course, the world."

The project does, of course, face a number of logistical difficulties, not least that there are only sixty four games played in the World Cup finals whereas there are one hundred and ninety three UN recognised countries in the world. "We did see that as a potential problem," said Harbingson, "but then we realised that we didn't have to play an entire match in one country. So, some matches will be played in ten or fifteen periods over several different countries. This will give more people the chance to participate in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest sporting events in the world, after the Superbowl and the INDY 500."

Reactions to the new proposals in the footballing community have been mixed, with a number of Premiership footballers voicing worries that their total lack of knowledge of geography might hamper their performance, while Ireland manager Giovanni Trappatoni was concerned that he might have to travel to Ireland. Meanwhile, Luiz Felipe Scolari, manager of Brazil, was highly critical of the proposal on security grounds. "We will be taking some of the world's top players into some of the world's most dangerous spots like Afghanistan, Iraq and North Korea, all of which have a clear element of danger," he said. "Even worse, Scotland might be independent by 2030 and there's no way any of us are getting out of that place alive."
