Vertically Challenged Giant on "NEAT-O"

And I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing when one item dominates the news, because everybody knows that 90% of subs will be linked to that story and it encourages people to come up with a fresh angle to differentiate their effort from the rest.

Rather than just bunging together a couple of popular topics like Ryanair and tramps and hoping for the best for example...

I still don't understand why that only made NiB, what more did it need?

What? Some actual jokes? Fuck that.

Ok, so I'm just jealous because I haven't managed to come up with anything for any of the topics so far. I do have one for episode 4 that I haven't managed to finish yet because I've been a bit busy, have I missed the deadline for that one?

Gerontius - the world, in a small way, was probably a better place for that ditch having been dug. And all the better for it having been dug with time, effort and care.

And malgor, quite rightly, mentions community. At the end of the day this is a community site and anything that makes it more so is a good thing. Because NB is generally a nice place to be, but in recent times hasn't been quite so nice as it used to be.

The other thing about the Neat-O is that it is set and judged by one of us. We do not all find the same things funny and the Neat-O judge is not necessarily looking for material for the FP.

Personally, I don't think the Neat-O leads to loads of shit subs on the same subject, a big news story does that. I think the Neat-O often leads to writers taking the theme and going in lots of different directions with it. Long live the Neat-O.

The Neat-O engenders a sense of community. It provides an opportunity to bounce an idea around and regularly yields one-liners and articles which make the front page.*

The basic idea is to write a funny around or referencing the Neat-O phrase or subject. Neat-O submissions fall into two categories: those that work as ‘normal’ comedy and those that only really make sense in the context of the particular Neat-O challenge. There’s nothing to stop an individual posting their Neat-O submission straight into the particular Neat-O thread in the Chat Room, if they wish, rather than clutter up the Writers’ Room.

*STOP PRESS: see Uncle Bertie's Mike Tyson FP just gone up. An excellent example of the Neat-O.

I'm not here to develop my writing. I just want to jot down any humorous ideas that come into my head and if it annoys some reader then tough. I get the impression much of my input goes unread anyway. If it gets "published" great, that's nice and rewarding.
Neat-o brings a competitive edge which is enjoyable and lets me see how I compare with the published regulars so I hope it continues.
Neat-o subs should go to the Writer's Room. The Holy Grail of neat-o must be to combine it with a current news item.

Then they should quit work, Gerontius. And break all their other commitments. It's hardly asking a lot, is it?

That's really kind of you and much appreciated.
But I'm reminded of the ditch-digger who works tirelessly from morning to night.
But at the end of the day, he's still only dug a ditch.
(David Carradine - Kung Fu c1972)

Serious point: I realise a lot of people simply haven't got the time to develop stuff. I'm sure they would like to but time and work commitments are against them.

Gerontius, all your subs are considered and well-developed, but there's a lot of really weak 'this popped into my head 3 seconds ago!' stuff that's distracting to say the least.

If people want to produce something decent, they have to put some work in. If everyone put as much as you do in, the board would be a better place.

We are not all FP regulars and it gives us mortals a chance to contribute and hopefully develop our writing.
If it encourages someone to have a go then surely it is doing its job?
The challenge is obviously to come up with something totally original.
OK...so it might be a bit beneath some of the big-hitters to contribute but don't knock it.
Many contributors will never make the FP but without them NB couldn't survive.
Besides, quite a few efforts have been used on the big page along the way.

If it does actually encourage people to think and develop an idea, then it's a good thing. But flooding the board with loads of subs on the same subject is a bad thing.

I think the biggest problem at the moment is people subbing underdeveloped ideas, or spewing up stuff that's barely coherent. Or is just a really, really shit pun. It's kind of depressing. Maybe we need a Funny-o?

Neat -O Challenge...it's a challenge.
Be creative.
The whole point of NeatO is to see how many different directions contributors can take it.
The world is your oyster VCG...go for it.
I was tempted to write something like Mentally Challenged Giant but that's just going to get me into trouble.

I won the neat-o but haven't had anything on the FP for.. oooh... well for ever.
Give a chap a chance.
The other thing is that it is only for a week unlike Savile et al. It does act to mix it up and rather than sameness adds variety.
What is this char room of which Charlie speaks? Sounds rather cosy.

I like neat-o, but get VCG's point. Maybe a cap of one one liner, one FP and one nib style per person. That way you only sub your best idea and it will be a little more thought out and considered .

I think Neat-O can be welcome relief - when there is a slow news day or week, I think it's quite nice to have a subject to think about.

Maybe we should keep neat-o to the char room ? That said, it has led to some decent Nibs and Tickers, maybe even an FP?

I think it's meant to get the creative juices going by getting folks to think about a random phrase or word or summat. A bit of inspiration when things get dry so to speak.

It was created back in the day when we had writers on here. They only subbed when they'd given their stuff a bit of thought, rather than nowadays when a lot of folks just pump out stream of consciousness cobblers.

It's just meant as a laugh Verty. You don't haff to take it serious none.

Right, I know NEAT-O is some sort of NB tradition dating back to before my time here, but I don’t really understand its appeal.

When one story dominates the news, e.g. Savile, phone hacking, Leveson etc. then we get a flood of subs all on the same subject. People generally seem to agree that this is a bad thing. But NEAT-O is quite popular, despite it actively encouraging a flood of subs on the same subject.

I don’t really see the difference between the two situations, but one is seen as being bad and the other good. Am I missing something?
