The new one is just an average (mean) of votes cast, with minimum 5 votes (including ones own) required for eligibility. If equal on points, the newer story is ranked higher, and stories disappear completely after 10 days. That's from 2 years of observation rather than a FAQ page.</p> <p>Older stories can reappear if someone has a "clear-out".
