In ground breaking research over a ten year period, officials from the Lawson Health Research Institute in Canada issued the following tips to avoid mixing up grapefuit and pills:

- Look at the size. Grapefruit is likely to be larger than a pill
- If it fits inside a medicine bottle it is probably a pill
- Most people can't eat two grapefruit so if you can still get anything down, it will probably be a pill
- Most pills are in sealed tamper proof packing, unlike grapefruit which is sold loose
- Most people are not hurt if a pill hits them on a head, so if you are suffering from concussion, it is more likely to be a grapefruit
- Most pills are tasteless so if you have eaten something that is strongly acidic, it is likely to be a grapefruit
- A grapefruit weighs twenty times more than a pill
- A pill has no outer casing unlike a grapefruit which has a thick yellow or orange peel

Dr David Anderson from the Institute was confident that adopting these principles would drastically reduce the number of grapefruit and pills mix up cases to 'just a couple of dozen a week'.
