Having sacked George Entwhistle, Director General of the BBC, after an abrasive interview on Today, and declaring himself “president for life”, John Humphrys has established his war-room in what was previously known as Studio B. Surrounding himself with henchmen, Humphries is intent on expanding his power base while the ailing corporation is reeling from resignations and recriminations.

The war-room is plain and functional. As unsmiling women in smart new uniforms push small figures, desks and tea-trolleys around a table-top map of the BBC floor-plan, Humphrys has been planning his strategy. His first move, after altering his Wikipedia entry to emphasise his leadership qualities over his news-reading skills, was to target the World Service. Fifty hand-picked stormtroopers walked casually into the Polish language department, interrupted a programme about tractors and replaced all Polish language output with re-runs of Mastermind. The soldiers are occupying the department and show no signs of leaving. Requests for them to “take their jackboots off the desks” have been met with swift reprisals. A cleaner was garotted “as a warning to the others”, and staff in other European language services are said to be “nervous”.

The motto above the doorway of Broadcasting House, Nation shall speak peace unto nation, has been replaced with Resistance is futile. BBC employees, already battle-weary, are considering their futures. The props department in the basement is being raided for weapons: mostly swords to fall upon. Morale at the corporation is said to be “at an all time low”. As one programme editor says, “The sight of John Humphrys goose-stepping down the corridor fills us with fear and trepidation. Suddenly the dumbing-down of breakfast TV doesn’t seem quite so important”...
