Fans of televised mysteries were left feeling deflated after police announced the arrest of Gary Glitter on sex charges.

‘It was all a bit obvious really – nowhere near as good as the pilot episode’ said Andrew Challis, a keen reader of Agatha Christie novels. ‘I had assumed the earlier police hints as to ‘prominent 70s entertainer’ and ‘one-time Asian resident’ were red herrings to deflect attention from the real offender, whom I suspected to be either David Cameron or Mother Teresa.’

‘And even when the lady came forward saying she had seen Glitter in Savile’s dressing room, I thought that was a clever reference to the sparkly stuff on Xmas decorations, rather than the now thrice disgraced singer.’

Inquiry head Superintendent John Rollo apologised for the elementary blunders and promised that a Belgium colleague and an elderly spinster would announce the next arrest at a large country house in Midsomer.

‘Or failing that we will just leak the arrest to Rupert Murdoch’ said Superintendent Rollo.

I promise this is my last Savile sub, well probably
