Anthony Harrison, 51, from Stockport has returned his winning medal from the Manchester Wheelers 10-mile time trial in 1980 following his confession for the use of a Fishermasn's Friend lozenge around a week before the prestigious event held on a Cheshire course.

In his first ever time trial, self-confessed drug cheat Harrison, recorded a time of 26 minutes and 46 seconds for the gruelling event, and was given a medal by the Late Eddie Soens at its annual dinner, probably to make sure he kept paying his annual £5 membership fee.

'Looking at what's happening with drug cheats like Lance Armstrong and Tyler Hamilton has made me question my own integrity and I remember that the Fisherman's Friend cleared my nasal passages and gave me a distinct advantage against the odd-bloke on the tricycle who was always sneezing and usually stopped for a picnic after 5 miles' said a remorseful Harrison.

Proof of Harrison's cheating was confirmed when an inspection of Manchester Wheelers recent time trial results reveal that his 1980-time would beat most modern-day riders despite him having the disadvantages of riding a heavy road bike with mudguards and panniers carrying his set of emergency anvils.'

Pat McQuaid, UCI President, commented 'Harrison has no place in our sport. Drug cheats like him are scumbags, Oh £50, I mean he should be knighted.'
