Studded with diamonds and dappled with light, the ring piece dates from his ‘They’ll Buy Anything’ period.</p> <p>“It’s astonishingly deep”, suggested art critic Desmond Bailey. “I’ve studied it at length, and it seemed to follow me around the room.” But others insist Hirst has deliberately set out to offend, and that baring one’s cheeks doesn’t bare one’s soul.</p> <p>“It’s below the belt”, argued rival artist Jeremy Throstle, who has called for a probe into how public interest was channelled into the project. “It just confirms to me that Hirst is full of shit.”</p> <p>A spokesman for the arts council confirmed they were looking into it </p>
