Bell Telecom in the US has moved to stop Apple and Samsung from using the push button keypad arrangement they say they invented in the 1950’s and rolled out to AT & T customers from 1963.
A spokesperson for Bell Telecom explained, “ There has been prolonged and blatant breach of our worldwide patent by both mobile phone manufacturers. We haven’t granted permission to anyone to use the patented four rows of three numbers with * and # either side of 0 in row four.”
Apple have begun recalling all iphones from v2 onwards to have a patch applied at their Chinese manufacturers site, whilst Samsung and all other Android users will be able to download an app from next Monday which will show the all the digits, but randomly in a different order and configuration.
Mobile phone users are advised not to use their handsets as phones until this app is downloaded.
Bell Telecom are expected to settle out of court with the mobile giants for a sum believed to be around “a gazillion dollars”.
Nokia were not available for comment as it’s now gone dark in Finland, so everyone’s gone home until Easter.
