In the wake of criticism from Ofgem and from consumer groups, utility companies are to publish energy bills and other communications in picture book formats to make them less baffling for consumers.

Illustrator and graphic novelist, Raymond Briggs author of 'The Snowman' and 'Fungus the Bogeyman,' has been drafted in to work with utility companies to create easy to understand formats for befuddled energy consumers.

“I am re-working elements of The Snowman and Fungus as I want to combine a wintry feel with scaring customers shitless with descriptions of soaring bills, leaky gas boilers, rising damp, mould issues and poor insulation.”

Ofgem has welcomed the move by energy giants and has stressed that the current confusing array of tariffs will be the first to change.

Mr Briggs, who was guest speaker at a recent British Gas convention in the Cayman Islands explained, “The Snowman tariff is for those who wish to freeze their bills for the next twelve months. It features a specially built in hypothermia alert which kicks in as soon as consumers go down to less than five layers of clothing. The Bogeyman tariff is for those on pre-payment meters which give out a high pitched moan when credit falls below five hundred quid.”

A spokesman for British Gas said, “We are delighted to be working with Mr Briggs and are anxious to state that we are also bringing our own brand of fairy tales to the table. In fact we are just walking in the air.”
