The MP for Bristol South, Philip Cheesewring, has called for an immediate ban on the sale of cocktails containing lava after a recent incident where one of his constituents had nearly half a pound of basalt removed from her intestines in an emergency operation.

Trendy nightclubs in the Bristol area have recently introduced the volcanic-themed cocktails where molten hot magma is added to spirits to create, as one club promotes these drinks, a "fiery spectacle".

The lava, which is flown in from Hawaii and kept in heated buckets under the bar, is one of several "novelty" ingredients that bar owners have been adding to cocktails recently. In April, a woman in Nottingham caused a minor security scare at Robin Hood airport after trying to board a flight two hours afer downing a cocktail containing plutonium, and phsyicists at CERN have been famous for years for throwing all-night science parties where their anti-matter mixers guarantee a drink with a bang.
