The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced ambitious plans for dealing with the recurrent problems of flooding and erosion in the mountainous regions of Northern England. Through diverting heavy rainfall by means of a series of small dams, and channels draining into specially excavated holes, it is hoped that any future inundations will be reduced to a minimum.

A spokesperson commented “We want to look after the Pennines, and let the ponds look after themselves.”
