A chap I knew did an autobiography via the self-publishing route and it was excruciatingly self-congratulatory. Not a surprise, as he once told a group of chums that he was 'unlucky'. Warming to his task, he explained that if a game/sport/contest required skill the he was indeed your man but if luck was the key, then forget it.

Sad to say it took me a while to decode. In essence if I won some form of contest with him it was luck, whereas if he won it was skill. You'd have to go a long way to match that kind of self-image.

I imagine most self-published books are indeed shite but if you're that certain yours isn't one of those and you have a bit of money to burn, why not? A friend of mine did that (Unimagined - Imran Ahmad; I even get a mention), it got picked by a major publisher and made several Book of the Year lists. Never made him a bean of course, but there you go.

I know someone who self-published a book (before e-books). Boy, was it unreadable! My friend was young, rich and full of himself, but, even then, isn't it sooo embarrassing self-publishing?

Perks, wayland is very popular, what you have to do is keep old PM conversations with him and add anything new that you want to say to one of those. Then just hope that he hasn't deleted it at his end and left you talking to yourself.
