Without hope or expectation (to quote Love Actually, for Fuck's sake) I quite the like the current system BUT I would exclude historical posts coming back up again- I think two and a half years is a little long to wait for recognition, and therefore 'the title' won't have a stimulating effect on tha author's current output.

Surely the fundamental judgement is popularity of the piece, and one stunning falsh of brilliance worth more than a group of workmanlike performances...I'm think Matt Le Tissier's golden moments, rather than Peter Reid's remarkable midfield engine.

Compromise could be only hits from your best three pieces count.

It would encourage writers to be a bit more prolific, and guard to some extent against "editor bias".

"Only the hits from your best three bits"

If a policy rhymes, it has to be right.

I think, (ergo sum), that the WoM should be awarded on the basis of the number of subs published, multiplied by the number of stars deducted by the one star fairy, subtract the number of page views on any pre-2010 submissions, divided by the number of Jimmy Savile related one liners, then awarded to Waylandsmithy anyway because that's the right thing to do.

Then we can all go off to the pub.

I think a hybrid system could work - the contributor who brought most readers to the site through all stories they had published in a month. That way a sustained run of great stories would usually be rewarded, but a single flash of brilliance sparking a massive viral hit could still win. A mixture of ongoing assessment and single examination across a range of subjects - lady and gentlemen, the NewsBiscalaureate...

dvo, it is a quick link in the writer's room called "writer of the month".

The current system means the one story with the most page views in the month gets the mug. The old system rewarded number of FPs etc per month. Obviously if it was the old system wayland would win the odd mug or three.

My suggestion was combine the old and new systems ...

Nope - still don't understand how the WOM thingy works, though never found a 'poor' writer getting the award.

After 15 months or so on this site was surprised to learn that wayland hasn't won yet. I'm inferring from jamsieoconnor's last post above that there's some means of checking back on past WOM. How does that work?

First of all, congrats Oxbridge! And well done Jamie ...

On the WoM issue, what about a system that contains the best elements of the old and the new and uses page views across all stories by an author that month?

Thus, if Waylandsmithy (as an obvious example) had 6 FPs and 4 NiBs and 3 of these stories were amongst the top 5 read stories that month, then the overall page views would probably be ahead of someone with a somewhat randomly tweeted FP that under the current system wins WoM. But a one-off real cracking FP that goes viral and brings heaps of people to the site would still stand a chance.

As an aside, my suggestion would mean WoM would go to the person who has presumably brought the most advertising revenue to the site that month which I guess in a capitalist system is as good a measure as any :)

Cheers Flash. I would have felt really guilty about winning, though, (1) as outlined above and (2) because I actually do know what pace notes mean.

On the writer of the month side, I know I'm only new here and don't want to seem like a prick, but it seems that picking it the current way leads to a potential danger of contributors spending more time working on increasing the number of their twitter followers/Facebook friends , etc. than working on good new writing. Anyone who gets a front page could just spend their time posting a link on every forum, YouTube video, Facebook page, etc. and win the writer of the month six months down the line despite having written nothing new.

I should point out that I'm definitely NOT alleging anything of the sort against Oxbridge. He's a fantastic writer with a proven track record who has won under both systems of picking writer of the month and if I manage to write even half as many top quality stories as him in my time here then I'll be delighted.

jamsie - the "Rally Driver" story is excellent, and would have been a deserving winner, however it was decided. The way it was produced, through comment and rework at the board, kinda vindicates house style. So nice one there.

The writer of the month point is valid - perhaps it needs replacing with a peer-based jury ? Or a monthly appointed (benign) despot ? Both have their flaws, but at least it keeps it in the extended dysfunctional family

I agree with jamsie and button. I don't think the new judging method is working. It certainly rewards those with a great many FB 'friends' and twitter followers but as a means to encourage quality and quantity, it's a failure.

Well done Oxy.

I think (and its clearly its not just me) that the 'new' method for picking WoM doesn't always reward the best writers. The best example being that Wayland hasn't won it yet. Can we go back to the old method? I won't win it either way, but it seemed fairer, and was more likely to foster a concerted and consistent effort from the best writers. Anyone else?

*Goes on a massive flounce about a story written in July 2009 somehow winning the writer of the month award in September 2012*.

That's not sour grapes, by the way, because it would have been even more of a travesty if my story had won (the "Mars Rover", "Gentle Giant" and "1987 VHS" stories were all far better, and that's just off the top of my head).

As a newbie, it just seems a bit of an odd way to pick writer of the month, as technically a person could not write anything in a given month and still win writer of the month for that month, even if someone else gets 29 front pages. Seems a bit random and reliant on lucky retweets and Facebook posts. Incidentally, the winning story is brilliant, it's just that the method for picking writer of the month seems flawed.

Okay, maybe just a bit of sour grapes.

After a fiercely contested two-horse race, Oxbridge has scooped the September Writer of the Month award for his story ‘Pope admits: ‘Actually I am the Antichrist’. Obviously too far ahead of its time when we originally published it in July 2009, the story has suddenly benefitted from the world progressing enough to finally recognise its revelatory message and has since gathered enough followers to become our most-read article last month. Congratulations to the prodigal son who nets himself a fatted calf, a NewsBiscuit mug and an eternity’s stay in hell.

Commiserations to newcomer jamsieoconnor whose enormously popular story ‘Rally driver admits he has no idea what co-driver is talking about’ was only a short distance behind Oxbridge’s and on any other month would almost certainly have bagged the award. Honourable mentions also to willedwards (‘Violent protests outside French embassies after Middleton pictures published’) and Perks (‘Advertisement Feature: Get your commemorative pair of ‘Invasion of Privacy’ Royal jugs’) who finished high up September’s hit parade.

Thanks for all your excellent contributions. We hope that no one will be offended by tomorrow’s front page photo of Muhammad and Kate Middleton both topless. We found it in Sir Jimmy Savile’s collection.
