Nestled deep in the heart of rural Surrey is the picturesque village of Headington. In 2008 the local community campaigned against plans to build a 30 turbine wind farm on the outskirts of the village. The campaign managed to gather so much attention, including regional news coverage, that local authorities were forced to find a compromise. They settled on the alternative plan of building just one nuclear reactor.

Margaret, a 36 year old house wife and mother of two remarked: “Wind farms are such an eyesore, they remind me of windmills or flowers, it's awful.” Like many of the campaign group she is happy with the new plant “It glows such a beautiful colour.”

Retaining the local scenic beauty was not the only issue for the residents, the noise of the turbines spinning would have ruined the tranquillity of the quiet village. Duncan Bell the 53 year old banker who was the driving force behind the campaign remarked: “The plant is much quieter than the wind farm would have been, most of the time.” He went on to add “twice a day they vent steam from the chimney, but they play a siren which gives us three minutes to get the dog inside and tape up the doors and windows. Apart from that it's been very peaceful.”
