Despite a disagreement between government Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell and police officers on duty in Downing Street recently, the Metropolitan Police deny that their attitude to dealing with politicians has changed. Nevertheless, it has been revealed that several meetings at Number Ten have had to be cancelled because attendees were delayed due to ‘enhanced police procedures’ at the entrance gates. And on his way home yesterday, Mr Mitchell himself was made to wait at the roadside for over two hours while officers checked the roadworthiness of his bicycle.

However, rather than agreeing with the Chief Whip and condemning the police, Prime Minister David Cameron has praised them and all the other people who are in roles capable of making life difficult or unpleasant for him and his staff. Indeed, it is believed that the Government has drawn up a list of professions that Conservative MPs will be instructed not to piss off, irrespective of the amount of provocation or how plebby the individuals involved are. Alongside the police on this list are understood to be security guards and customs officials, while House of Commons catering workers also feature highly.
