I don't even have a fruit bowl - I just keep it all in the tins until I am really hungry and I have ran out of Wotsits.

Though when I was a kid there was always an Airfix toy soldier from The Battle of Waterloo in our bowl.

It was an Hussar crouching by his felled horse.

A fine NiB, DBL! I think the Ed keeps his quote marks 'in the kitchen drawer, or somewhere'. Never thought to look in his fruit bowl. How ironic is that!

Once found a single grape that had been in my fruit bowl so long it had become a raisin.
I planted that lonely raisin and now I own a vineyard in Alsace

Are you supposed to offer guests fruit? I tend to offer beer and hula-hoops (salt & vinegar) to mine. If I offered them the fruit bowl all they'd get is an old lightbulb and a pair of scratched sunglassed perched jauntily on top of a black banana (not a euphemism)

Obviously the pinapples are left to go mushy before putting them in the bin. The fruit equivalent of the unread Steven Hawking book on the coffee table ?

I've just taken a quick look, and there was a part of the food mixer in our fruit bowl, so I feel normal now.

It's not a class thing CH. Some of my best friends are middle class, and they all have various detritus in their fruit bowls. I'm sure even HRH slings her Land Rover keys in the royal fruit bowl after a busy day's stag hunting. If you can keep it fruit only, you're a class act. Well done. And a pineapple too. Extreme.

I feel left out and middle class - my fruit bowl has fruit in it, sometimes pineapples!
Great piece though, well observed apart from in my house.

Schoolboy error on the batteries, Lego, paper clips and small allen keys front. Thanks to all. Rewrite:

A YouGov poll has revealed that most British families keep everything in their fruit bowls apart from fruit. Car keys, bills, Lego, small allen keys, batteries of indeterminate residual power, paper clips, washers and disposable lighters topped the list, with one respondent claiming to keep her Fiat 500 in her fruit bowl. Fresh fruit came bottom of the list, although rotten fruit, bought with the best intentions of being eaten, scraped into the top ten.

“I’ve now got so much unopened mail in my fruit bowl that I’ve started keeping apples and bananas in the filing cabinet in the study,” said one respondent. Another said: “When we do buy fresh fruit, it briefly provides a worthy and colourful centrepiece among the parts of my dismantled Honda 70 engine.”

Hey Malgor, lovely to see you here again.

I have three fruit bowls, none of which currently hold any fruit. I generally have some apples and maybe a couple of bananas there for the YM, but all three are completely empty at the moment because I had a clearout of paperclips, 1 pences, batteries, elastic bands, and small Allen Keys. I put them all into a rinsed out takeaway container and stuck it all in 'that' kitchen drawer.

You know the one where you keep rolls of film, random keys, parts of no longer used remote controls, takeaway menus, hastily scribbled phone numbers, and dried out bottles of Tippex.

I lost my fruit bowl some years ago. It was wickerwork and, being organic, suffered from the acidic juices from rotting fruit and itself decayed, but over many years, like a piece of long-life fruit.

Since then, I’ve been using a Pyrex ovenproof flan dish as a substitute fruit bowl, which holds my bananas and, again, AA batteries. Lacking any packaging, these batteries may be unused, totally exhausted, or used but probably still got a bit in them.

I heard a nice phrase on the radio the other day 'Fruit rollover'. Used to describe the apple/banana/orange etc that you took to work that morning with good intentions of eating, and when its still there on your desk at the end of the day you think 'I'll have it tomorrow' - Fruit rollover.
