i don't know! you call a bloke a cunt once, and he goes on and on about it for months.

im sorry mr shufflecock, all right, it was a slip of the keyboard, i meant to say that you were cute, <strike>but the old subconscious took over and made me write the truth</strike> but mispelt it.

Just to add to the discussion, I do disagree with the 'newbee' bit - everyone here has been really welcoming here, I've had good articles and bad articles but no one has laid into me, they've been really encouraging to me even though I work in banking.

re: getting back to the original sub
took me ages - I couldn't work out what 'checks' had got to do with the Welsh...it wasn't until I had polished off my first glass of cider that it came to me.
re: flounce
this has been the most interesting exchange of views in ages.
just like the old days - more flouncing please.
eventually you realise the scoring doesn't make one jot of difference and you just get on with it.
most people do it for the joy of writing and hopefully making someone else smile.
I don't think any of us are going to take comedy in a new direction
Well, I might but you lot have got no chance.

Martin, there's no 'turf' to protect. If I like something I say so, if I don't I sometimes mention that too.

The writer's room needs fresh blood, but that's not the same as praising every sub-standard stream of consciousness (sp?) that gets posted. Maybe if you get the same response in 'all the other sites', the problem lies with you?

Waylandsmithy

For information: I'm not here to cause trouble. I came here again, after registering 18 months ago to see what an old mate was writing here. I can vaguely comprehend the idea of protecting one's turf, particularly when one is socially inadequate sans keyboard, but calling someone a "cunt" when they've only been around occasionally, simply illustrates what a small group of like minded dunderheads you've accumulated here.

This place needs mucking out.

As does a donkey stall.

PS - I swear that after this evening you won't hear from me for a long time. Just try to be nice to people, and don't crucify people who are dipping their toe into the water in this form of media in order to enhance your own personal inadequacies.

You remind me of another egotistical ranting knobhead whose name momentarily escapes me. Maybe you should become Arsebook friends.

PS - No offence intended to genuine contributors. It's just that certain people go out of their way to be abrasive and nasty, and you're better off without them. If any of said people would like to pursue the argument, I'm not hard to find.

I found the original sub funny, once I'd read it three times. Clever funny, which is a ripple of the lip and a nod of the head, rather than an involuntary emission of personal fluids.

I had a flounce on here a fair while ago when a (in my opinon) substandard sub by a famous name was slapped straight up on FP without editting, clunky prose included. Its not the greatest hill of beans, but wherever people are in competition for something, its kind of nice to feel there is a level playing field. That said, I do tend to click on wayland's posts more often, 'cos he's made me laugh before lots of times.

To be fair, I used to often order Crispy Chilli Beef with Young Chow Fried Rice on a similar principle. Its not that I had anything against the Beef with Broccoli and Green Pepper in Black bean Sauce, not at all...its just the Crispy Beef had made me happy so many times and, well, I just came to rely on it, you know? It was a comfortable relationship, we knew where we were with each other, and there's a kind of trust that develops. Eventually of course, times change and we move on. I don't live in student digs in Liverpool anymore, and Cornwall isn't so well off for Chinese takeaways...but then, camping with the family near St Just, Crispy Chilli Beef wasn't on the menu...and thats how Pork and Peanut Yuk Sum and I first met. The rest is history.

My reasons for being here are very simple: having a laugh; receiving constructive criticism from my peers, and; hopefully producing something that makes others laugh.

Generally, what I write tends to be things that make me laugh, or that came about as a result of late-night online chats with Quaz, who seems to share my rather childish sense of humour. If others don't find it amusing, well written or whatever, that's fine. You can't please everyone.

There are one or two people who haven't grasped this about me, but the majority have, and there are a number of people on here whose opinion and advice I value, but equally there are those whose opinion and/or advice is ignored because they don't practise what they preach.

This whole sycophancy thing is tosh. I've been here for years now, possibly the longest now that some of the original bunch have moved on, many to paid writing work, and Waylandsmithy, VCG, Perks, Button etc are relative newbies in that context.

They have produced consistently well written, funny, and clever pieces so have quickly found their niche, others try hard and often improve. Many more don't grasp the concept of the site which is for us to offer ideas, suggestions and criticism.
When those things are not accepted, the contributor tends to move on. Or become a troll.

But this has all been done to death previously, so perhaps you should do a site search for key words such as cabal, voting system, clique etc.

You say that things are no different here to other similar sites, do you make a point of stirring things up in those other sites too, or were we special?

Ok, but whats that got to do with people commenting on waylands subs, which was the original moan. I dont think anyone thinks they are better than anyone else. If they do I haven't seen it, and I come here most days. Yes people want to get on the front page, but i think thats having something to aim for.
The only hostility I ever see is people moaning about others success. Thats what I don't get.

Bulletproof, and not funny either.

It's a massive lie, Shuttlecock. You're just here to cause trouble, for whatever reason. It's just possible that you and your sock puppets aren't well-received because you're recognised for who you really are by some old hands (I don't count myself in that group: I'm relatively new too).

The best way to receive positive feedback is to TRY AND WRITE SOMETHING FUNNY. If you write something substandard, you'll either get no comments, or negative ones.

Honestly, we're not all 9 years old. We don't need constant reassurance that 'that's really good', or 'well done, did you draw mummy yourself? Aren't you clever!'.

I blame the growing sense of entitlement amongst the lazy who blame everyone but themselves for their own failure. Suck it up, take criticism on the chin and try and learn from it.

Fair enough Perks,

I rarely visit here, and the last thing I am is bitter. I popped back in to support a mate and see what he was writing. That's as far as it goes. As a result of that, I had a message from a new user who wondered if it's always as hostile and cliquey. New user being one starred - the usual.

I've been registered here for a year and a half, although it isn't really my cup of tea. Seems like everybody scrabbling for a coveted slot on the FP. Not that much different to any other site of this kind.

So I put in a couple of really stupid subs, just to see what the reaction would be. In response to a message I received.

My name won't be familiar to most, because I never came here often. However, I was a bit taken aback by the hostility I encountered. It was inferred that I am a "cunt" by one of your writers, and endorsed by another.

The bottom line, is that you're not that funny, you're a closed elitist group, and that you treat newcomers like shit.

Honestly, some people on here are so far up each other's arses that they could lick the inside of their ribs.

Sycophancy appears to be the order of the day.

Most have been fair, which is good, but on every satirical website you get people who think they're Galton and Simpson, or Johnny Speight, or John Sullivan...and they aren't.

I really had no intention of being disruptive, but if the kind of shit that prospective writers have to face can be exemplified by how people are treated as newcomers on sites like this, then maybe somebody needs a rethink.

Me? I'm bulletproof. Some people are rather more sensitive. Possibly that's a point to ponder. If it isn't, it should be.

Why does it matter?

If people want to say everything someone does is great well, let them, who cares. If people want to say something is shit, let them. If people want to be constructive, brilliant. If someone wants to one star without leaving a comment, fine.

On the whole, write something well thought out and funny people will say. Write something not so good, people will ignore it, but why worry about the reaction someone else gets. I don't get it.

It can begin to sound bitter.

Re: scoring/starring...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...who cares.
If people feel they are more deserving, then why not try one of the other sites?
This site is for us losers and no-hopers still trying desperately to get a foot on life's cruel ladder.
If you think you're better than us, then go try somebody elses ladder. - Quoted from Gerontius.

Don't think I'm better than anybody else old son. Even though you did miss the apostrophe out of else's. Just try to be nice occasionally.

Prick. (As in burst bubble. And your mate Sid. And the Salmon pAste MasHup)

Obviously...unless...you know better.

I doubt it.

I'll be back in a few months to check.

Shuttlecock.
