The PSNI have issued a statement saying that David Cameron’s disappointing cabinet reshuffle has played a major role in sparking the violence that has rocked the province over the past two nights.
Northern Ireland Chief Constable Nick Maggott said feelings were running high in the Province after several leading Tories had either been moved or replaced altogether as part of an extensive government reshuffle.
But David Cameron has told rioters in Northern Ireland that while he fully understands their disappointment at losing Health Secretary Andrew Lansley from his post, the PM insisted it was the right choice to make and that ‘bloody protest on the streets of Belfast – no matter how violent - would not force him to change his mind’.
Although some rioters said they were pleased to see Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt given another chance, losing Lansley was still a massive blow to the political landscape here in the UK and further violence could not be ruled out.
One leading Conservative back-bencher said promoting Hunt had clearly been an inspired choice but it would have been better if Cameron had announced the reshuffle all in one go rather than drip-feeding the changes over a period of several days.
‘There was always going to be a backlash following the Lansley decision and so for the Ulster Constabulary to have only 60 police officers hospitalised after two nights of intense violence has to be seen as something of a result’ said the MP ‘however, what happens when news breaks that Edward Garnier has also gone is anybody’s guess.
I wouldn’t want to be a police officer in Northern Ireland when that one gets out’.
Bricks and bottles were used as makeshift ammunition as police tried to contain the angry mob and a petrol bomb was thrown as news spread that former Chief Whip Patrick Mcloughlin was to get Transport.
And with other leading Tory ministers set to lose their jobs during the cabinet reshuffle, police were bracing themselves for a further night of violence.
But a spokesman for the SDLP said they had been warning the government about political unrest for months and that it was time to let the paramilitaries take back the streets before the violence got out of hand.
‘When a man can get knee capped, tarred and feathered and chained to a lampost just for saying Chris Grayling would never make a decent cabinet minister then something clearly needs to be done.
At least dressing the Ulster police in those new bright orange uniforms should add a splash of colour to proceedings and help calm things down a bit.
At least Cameron seems to have got that one right’.
