How did you 'grow up with working class pride'? I don't think it was a concept that was even mentioned when I was at school.

My observation was that there was a great deal of hatred and suspicion of people who created businesses, jobs and wealth combined with a complete lack of understanding of how market economies work. I don't think anyone had heard of entrepreneurs in the 70s, much less wanted to be one.

The heavy unionization meant that sons did follow their fathers into the pits, having gained no other useful skills. They joined the constant struggle against the evil owners of course. Union members struck in solidarity with other members because they too felt victimized.

"Work class pride" meant feeling solidarity with other people who had similar lack of wealth creating skills. It was inverted snobbery with flat caps on.

My father was in the education sector, an area of high unionization and complete cluelessness of economics to this day.

'Common People' also top ten, there's room for both views. But there was such a thing, you can take pride in whatever you do, no matter how many are higher up the heap then you.

I'm with you on that one, Quaz. Great song. Although if you've been to Glasto, you're definitely middle class.

I alway's thought Pulp's "Common People" was the best of a thin crowd of political/class comment songs to come out of the 90s. Seeing that live at Glasto in 95 was a highlight of my life.

How did you 'grow up with working class pride'? I don't think it was a concept that was even mentioned when I was at school.

I think it's a reinvention and glamourisation of the shit, poorly-paid jobs that were heavily unionised. Take mining: a quick tour of a working mine and a chat with ex-miners reveals that the work was hateful, they were treated like shit by the managers and most tried any way they could to dissuade their kids from following in their footsteps.

Working class pride is a myth. No-one has ever been content at the bottom of the shit heap, except for the odd pervert.

I grew up with it, so "Working Class Pride" certainly existed until the mid-80s I would say.

The decline of Trade Unions and the rise of an "Aspirant Middle Class" put paid to "Working Class Pride"

'the best ever anthem about the gradual crushing of working class pride' sounds like quite a narrow awards category to me. How many nominees were there?

As a delegate in a union conference in Harrogate the motion was brought up to merge with an extremely passive union which failed, however the NEC had it within their gift (unknown to all concerned) to call an extra-ordinary general meeting in Eastleigh 2 months later where the motion was passed, an absolute stitch up but for an hour prior to the meeting there was on a continous loop 'If you tolerate this, then your children will be next', that's irony.

...the Manic Street Preachers 'A Design for Life', the best ever anthem about the gradual crushing of working class pride, is now wallpaper music to support corporate sponsorship by Sainsbury's, Britain's second most successful destroyer of local communities?

Being serious for once.
