An aide has confirmed the Deputy Prime Minister wishes he could just go back to a normal life.</p> <p>Clegg has confided: ‘I didn’t want to have to make any decisions that actually affect peoples’ lives. Why do you think I joined the Liberal Democrats in the first place? It’s quite a worry. I thought the idea of being a Lib Dem was getting a weekend in Brighton every year and some nice biscuits at party meetings. Nobody joins the party with any hopes of actual political influence; let alone a ministerial position.’<br /> Clegg was reported to have found the initial media attention quite a buzz. ‘He was chuffed about being on the telly’, said the aide, ‘he was texting all his mates and family. However, he realised his ambition of meeting Jeremy Paxman quite early on, so it was all a bit downhill from there. He still keeps the photo of Jeremy and him in his wallet, talks to it sometimes, it’s not healthy really.’</p> <p>Critics believe the role of the Deputy PM has no portfolio, no real responsibilities and can always pass the buck if things go wrong. Most communications from the office are normally well-intended, but are rarely going to make much difference. </p> <p>The aide found it hard to disagree, ‘I mean we haven’t had one for two years and the last one was John Prescott, so it’s not like it’s a proper job. He shouldn’t be too concerned, he can’t mess anything up of note. Very much like being leader if the Lib Dems when you think about it.’ </p>
