But Tony is the man. I only signed up for the first film because the script I read was a sensitive account of his life. But then the studio insisted on rewrite after rewrite, and by the end I’m a goddam superhero flying around Los Angeles instead of a tragic clown in a cardigan living in East Cheam, Surrey. The only thing they kept in was the boozing. So this time I’m gonna star and direct so we get it right.” Smith excitedly quoted from his re-enactment of Hancock’s classic TV episode “The Blood Donor” (“It may be only a pint to you, but it’s life or death to some poor brother, you mother!”) before mentioning fellow cast members who have already signed up to the project. “We got Morgan Freeman to play Sid James, and Cameron Diaz is just a truly incredible Hattie Jacques.” The part of Kenneth Williams has proved more of a problem. “Denzel (Washington) was desperate for the part - I mean he just nails that voice - but unfortunately he’s just too tall. So at the moment I’m thinking Eddie Murphy or Whoopie Goldberg.” At present Smith is location-scouting. “I’m not sure if East Cheam has actually got enough of what I call cheamishness. But the guys back in LA can build incredible sets, so we may film there after all. I just want to keep it real.”
