Dvo, a truly excellent surgeon (and wonderful man who tolerated my presence at his elbow from gawky awkward fifteen year old to, well, gawky awkward 24year old) was averse to human blood- to the point of nearly fainting when his son cut his finger, utterring 'err...better get mummy...oooh'.

I put to sleep our old girl (dad brought her up to me) and was a professional up until the injection administered, then a sobbing wreck as soon as she had passed away- with hindsight, it was strangely like the flick of a switch.

(for clarity, 'our old girl' was a labrador. Mum and Dad both happily still very well.)

@ID "And I should look on the bright side- at least Dvo ain't got a dog... "

Nah, not very succesful with dogs - all 3 disposed of via the services of your colleagues.

The first one only lasted 14 years FFS - last couple of years with diabetes. Chasing her round the garden in the morning to get the early morning sample, quick sample test a flick of the needle and in it goes (funny thing is I am still needle-averse meself and managed to pursuade our local GP practice nurse that she didn't need to take a blood sample at my recent health-check visit). And uninsured! Think I cried more after the deed than after my father died - how does that work then?

More successful with cats as 2 out of 3 have survived and a Vauxhall Vectra disposed of one of the originals. Still, fair play; up to then it was Rodents 0, 'Wooster' 147.

'Wooster Too' has already surpassed his forerunner.

I hope I'm not being charged for this therapy, my bill to you is in the post. Truro isn't it?

And thanks for the nursing Jeni. Now I am back to sober and cynical, perhaps we can return to mutual mockery, national abuse and viscious insults...though my new defence will of course be 'I only said you're a scotch fliberty-jibbet 'cos thats what I thought you said to me, and I was repeating what you never said in an ironic question. Please please please please believe me, as I've hired the most expensive lawyer I could find to help my express my sincerity'.

PS Al...vets consistently rank as the profession most likely to commit suicide, always managing to fend farmers off the top. Pretty much every vet knows of someone, and personally I've lost a former friend and colleague, and know of others for whom it has got too much, but got help.

We work stupid hours, deal with huge emotions, and have the ready means and knowledge to kill painlessly.

By the way- not a cry for help, just for info. I would be out of the profession and into something else like a shot if I ever got anywhere near there.

Oh, and I did an operation on a rescued 8week black lab puppy born with a heart abnormality that strangled her oesophagus, couldn't swallow without instant regurgitation and vomiting. Rescue clinic and ourselves bore the costs between us. (would have cost c.£2,500) New owner brought Agnes in just last week, now a chubby 6month hooligan of a barrel of fun. There are great times in this job too.

And I should look on the bright side- at least Dvo ain't got a dog...

Aww shucks team.

Morning watching 5year old son at football, lunchtime talking about newspapers, afternoon with 6year old daughter in her den planning a guinea pig ad campaign, and this evening will be celebratory family trip to the cinema (Ice age 2, potentially a source of material)

Phone call in to work and the team are holding the fort; I don't need to go in and suffice dealing with angsty owners till after the weekend.

Now, does anyone have anything resembling a paracetamol please? I suspect it must have been something I ate...

Yes, but you don’t have to drink loads of shit wine, BJ.
Duke, you have my sympathies; the one thing that should never be underestimated is the stupidity and churlishness of the general public. I would happily sell a kidney to pay for the care of my old tom cat (if necessary, one of my own). Most vets, in my experience, are really good at what they do. Don’t let a few silly clients spoil what must be a rewarding job.

ID, I suspect you're asleep at the moment, but you have my best wishes. The animals you treat deserve you, but not the owners. Have you thought of neutering the owner, or using barbiturate ?

When you eventually wake up with that thumping head, give those kids' school reports some attention.

Oh, and try this:

All day long Bob had been feeling guilty. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't forget. The guilt and sense of betrayal overwhelmed him. Every once in a while though he could hear a quiet inner voice reassuring him, "Bob, don't worry about it. You are not the first doctor to sleep with one of your patients and you certainly won't be the last". Then, invariably though, another voice would bring him back to reality, "Bob, you are a veterinarian."

Good-oh.

The surgery point is if your colleagues who are facilitating the process (raising the vein, monitoring the anaesthetic, theatre nursing) don't have total confidence in the surgeon, then it is a distressing and worrying process for them. Fundamentally, nurses hate working with a surgeon they aren't confident in.

that, therefore, is my excuse for swanking round like Anton Meyer in the early Holby City episodes (God damn, he was so f*cking surgeon!)and only letting emotion out occasionally- such as half-cut with good friends on Biscuit having wrangled through a bunch of bastards and seeing good colleagues laid low.

And yes, I am fully aware I shall read this in the morning and wince at the emoteing...but then it'll be smeared with grounding, disrespectful, pompousness pricking jibes from fellow Biscuits, and that will be a lovely thing.

Out of wine. Beer now.

I completely agree, but once I've completed my traineeship I can choose to specialise in a particular area, which is perfect because I too am rather opinionated and judgmental.

I see your point as regards surgery. Strangely, I never had any trouble assisting surgery even when it was an animal I knew quite well. I always focused entirely on what I had to do.

Hmm; and I sometimes think I'd like to have been a lawyer and argue professionally. Thing is I'm highly opinionated and judgemental, so I think I;d only be any good arguing for something or someone I believed in, and I don't think thats quite the idea.

There is a category of professional collageaue who fails to contruct their wall; feels every moment passionately. Remember vets typically have ten minute consults and will often see 30-50 patients per day in first opinion work on consultign days. Some will be simple checks and boosters; but many will be challenging and difficult cases.

For a vet to go through every emotion the client feels, they will swiftly become a non-functioning wreck. And when it comes to somebody operating on your precious one, do you want sobbing jelly, or the calm and objective, functioning professional who is keeping a lid on it?

Any time Id. I've sent it virtually.

I have the ultimate respect for vets and VNs. If I'd had the brains, I'd have been a vet. As it was, I was an 'unofficial' VN, without the qualifications or wage, poor as it is.

As a wee Saturday girl, although I had 6yrs of trying, I never did get to grips with the wall. Each and every pet which came through the door got to me, even the fecking Pom which took half my hand off. Probably just as well I failed Chemistry in 2nd year at school, I'd never have coped with being a vet.

Important I retain my cynical exterior. Thanks for the very kind words. A small word to the wise- alcohol, flowers great...but if you want something everyone can share together over a brew, a basket of fruit and some chocolate digestives are the topsest.

Everyone has their own style. I advise colleagues to build a personal, professional wall. You cannot feel the same grief as an owner. They will experience it once every ten years. We do it daily; and genuinely, we are not as emotionally involved as an owner who shared their live with a pet for a decade. So I'm professional and compassionate with the client, and release to cynical and act the japery with colleagues. Then occasionally one punctures that and you buckle, but that is private.

I also teach my vets that in surgery your clinical colleagues and assistants have to have faith in you, otherwise they worry. So research it, call for help, practice, ask me to keep an eye, scrub in, or even do this one while you watch...but for fucks sake don't go to jelly and tell everyone you're shitting it; no-one wants the surgeon to be rocking.

Last December I lost three patients in ten days, one to my surgical error. My colleagues surrounded me and supported me all the way, even though I'm the guy at the front who does the big stuff and who's meant to be there for them when they are struggling. I sent a personal message to everyone in the practice thanking them for their support after that.

I just wish, when dealing with people who just show the angriest contempt for professionals in any capacity, they could see how it really is. Yes, we make rude jokes about bulldog owners and fat clients with fat pets, we wade through shit and piss, we triumph and we fuck up, we spend nights researching cases so we get it right, or so we say the right thing in a two minute phone call; but fundamentally we care about what we do- thats why we picked it.

NOW...Jeni, you mentioned something about another bottle I believe!!

ID, I know it's not all about me, but, I have lots of recent experience with vets.

One of the receptionists at Angell Memorial (THE pet hospital in the US, of course) here in Boston recently said to me "Ooh, you've been through all the specialties here." I have, and I could not have been more pleased for what they did and tried to do for Rikkor and me. Humans, dogs, ferrets, none of us are getting out of here alive. It's just best to accept that, and do the best you can with the professionals who are trying to help you.

Reread your comment ID and I get it now. Six years is two degrees. So glad I mentioned that I'm a Cam-grad and then instantly typed something thick. I did go there though, honest, it didn't only happen inside my mind.
