The campaign for gay and transgendered rights was today given an unprecedented boost at a press conference to introduce the liberal-conservative coalition. David Cameron and Nick Clegg, the first openly gay couple to hold the prime ministerial office in the United Kingdom, announced their intention to form a united coalition government - and a united heart.

The announcement comes at the end of a turbulent period in lib-con relations, as the conservatives accused the liberals of flirting with labour behind their back, and labour in turn accusing the liberals of whoring themselves out and two timing. But it was all smiles and laughter with the couple today, who went all out in a show of affection to demonstrate the strength of their relationship.

"We're just meant to be together", said Cameron, brushing a lock of hair from Clegg's cheek. "labour were just making it up to break us apart, but we're stronger than that. Besides, they were seeing the SNP on the side"

However, the announcment wasn't just a bed of roses for the new couple. Tensions were raised as one journalist enquired "do you regret saying that your favourite joke of the campaign was Nick Clegg?", prompting a near flounce-off from the liberal democrat leader.

"Come back", cried a visibly distressed Cameron. "...You complete me".

Gay activists today welcomed the developments. "It's not just about the principle", said one source from the Terrence Higgins trust, "but the sight of two men being so affectionate towards each other, in the rose garden at downing street of all places, will do wonders for the perception of what it is to be a modern gay man".

Chris Grayling was unable to comment on behalf of the Conservative party as he was spending a weekend in a bed and breakfast
