Recently declassified MI5 papers have sensationally revealed that Peter Pan of pop, Sir Cliff Richard, was secretly recruited by British intelligence services in the 60s as a frontline agent in the cold war against Soviet Russia.

Squeaky clean Sir Cliff, real name Harry Webb, was given the brief to release his brand of appallingly bland music to act as a smokescreen for his more clandestine activities. Having successfully established himself as a sleeper in the pop world without causing any suspicions he was then 'activated' when during the performance of his Eurovision 2nd place entry, Congratulations, at London's Albert Hall in 1968 his handler, Col. Nigel Peters, encouraged him to "Buddy up with Johnny Foreigner to see what he could find out. There's a good chap, what?".

What the 'Bachelor Boy' subsequently discovered hasn't actually been declassified so it's assumed that whatever it was must have been some pretty serious shit. He went on to remain active in espionage circles until the late 70s, both working incognito with his backing group, The Shadows, and in a solo role also. Then as age encroached and after he had done his duty, Webb, real name Sir Cliff Richard, was stood down from active service and returned to the world of pop full-time to inflict an immense load of guff on the record buying public throughout the 80s before then being knighted for his services to both Queen and country.

Sue Barker, once linked to the housewives' heartthrob as a potential 'significant other', was remaining tight-lipped last night and refused to say anything much to shed further light on the matter. The perky blonde Question of Sport presenter told reporters, "I was only involved in helping Cliff with the odd set of tennis. It's no secret, I suppose, that we would meet at Queen's Club or maybe Wimbledon and knock one out now and again, but that's as far as it went."
