Hello. I'm not exactly new here, having followed NB for ages now. (Think bunny-boiler, but without the bunny boiling.) Have often been tempted to comment but don't really know how to work one of these computer gizmos. However, too much vino has finally tempted me into having a go tonight.

BJ; I think you could be my musical soul mate, if we could just add in a little Proclaimers (both of them) & it goes without saying, Bernard Cribbens.

It seems a few of you here are quite fond of a bit of the old prog. In which case may I draw your attention to Knifeworld, proudly flying the prog-rock flag and playing a few choice gigs over the summer to support their new EP. They're really quite good:

I'm with Duff on this one Textbook - Moving Pictures for me, though the other two you mention are also superb.

From reading through these lists, I'm pleased (although a little suspicious) that very little radio 'music' is mentioned. By this, I refer to the abominable offerings that make Radio 1 so unbearable these days.

I, myself, enjoy a healthy mix of modern and olden 'eclectic' music - CollieP, great word. This is summed up excellently by one of my modern day musical heroes, Steven Wilson; when asked what music he writes, he replies "Weird shit".

Wayland, do you include the Ozric Tentacles or Gong in your Space Rock portfolio?

My final observation is a lack of jazz types - any out there? I will readily put on a background be-bop (largely sax) album of an evening to pretend I'm sophisticated but too cool for classical. Davis, Coltrane, Oscar Peterson + Lester Young among others.

I like to use the word ‘eclectic’ when describing my musical taste to show that I’m a well-rounded person, despite not really knowing what it means.

I mention a variety of bands and artists from many different genres. Some modern, to show that I’m down with the kids and still seeking out new music. Some oldies, to show that I appreciate the classics and take my music so seriously that I actively track down some from before I was even born. Then I throw in a less well known artist who critics generally agree is technically adept, to show that I’m about more than just what I’m spoon-fed, and I appreciate the talent involved in the playing of instruments. I’ll also mention something poppy or cheesy, to show that I don’t take myself too seriously and can have fun and laugh at myself.

If she still doesn’t find me interesting or want to sleep with me then I’ll go and talk to somebody else.

Err, I mean, woof.

Textbook: I'm going back in my mind to mid-70s when to mention Magma was inevitably met with a blank look followed by, "Who?"

It's a brave man that mentions the "P" word too. Prog (Yes in particular) was always my favourite genre as a lad and still continues to be to this day. But when punk came in you nearly had to go into hiding for a good 20 years before being able to mention it in mixed company again. Though now it seems to be acceptable-ish once more.

Always had a soft spot for Rush too. My fav album being Moving Pictures.

A former mentor lent me not just his gifts for client communication and clinical acumen, but also his Pink Fairies albums (as I recall, their guitarist set up Motorhead with Lemmy from Hawkwind, so the first Motorhead album On Parole was a mix of the two, containing the marvellous tunes 'I've laid a Chambermaid' and 'Vibrator' ("I'm a va-va-va-va-vibrator, ever-ready all the time; reach for me now, I'm ready and how")

Currently listening to Wilco, John Mayer, Alabama Shakes, Jonathan Wilson, Dawes, Laura Marling, Angus & Julia Stone, Kassidy, Father John Misty, Bon Iver and the Black Keys.

As a default I will always revert back to Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, James Taylor, and the Beatles, oh and not forgetting Africa by Toto and More than a feeling by Boston.
