What? A republic rids us of the class system? Well it would rid us of top royalty but to be fair I have never been bothered by them. France tried to get rid of the class sytem and failed. They currently have the highest percentage of wealth owned by the smallest percentage of people. This despite trying to reduce the height of all toffs by a head. I am pretty sure its not a meritocracy.

Republicanism might have some appeal if you thought for one moment that apolitical well-meaning people who'd achieved something in life would stand for a four year stint.

Over years past and to come candidates possibly including:
Olympians: Redgrave, Pinsent, Coe, Cram, Grey-Thompson
Musicians: Daltrey, Barlow,
Actors: McGregor, Atkinson,Fry
Writers: Curtis, Rowling,Hislop
Presenters: Attenburough, Snow, Paxman
Journalists: Adie, Beurk, Deedes,
Sportsmen: Charlton (B),Lineker, Woodward, Dallaglio
Businessmen: Sugar, Branson
plus the fields of Medicine, Science, Engineering where people of achievement don't necessarily make the front or back pages.

There must be someone from that list you could see cutting ribbons, smiling benevolently and handing out medals.

However...
1. it would be some smarmy politician that would get it instead
2. would the rest of the world really care who was doing a current four year president stint?
3. would they have the long-term links with the armed forces that are so useful and symbolic?
4. sometime or another one of them would rattle their gob on something controversial, or be found to have knobbed a fan / snorted a line / goosed a vicar, or other trivial misdemeanour. At least the Royals are protected by a wall of silence again now, so other than the odd Hitler costume or dope puff, all gets kept pretty schtum.

So...in conclusion...keep the monarchy, because William and Harry look pretty dashing in uniform and ladies the world over are dribbling over them.

So who is going to head up this Republic?
Clearly it would go to the most deluded nut-job with the biggest bank account or the most fanatical following.
So let’s put it to the test....here is a list of likely candidates.
Cameron, Osborne, Johnson, Branson, Cowell, Abu Hanza, Jessie J, Sugar, Tatchell, Abu Qatadar, Bob Crow, Beckham, General Sir Mike Jackson, JLS or little old lady
Don’t forget – your vote counts.
We voted for a Government to run the country...look where it got us.
Do you honestly think an elected President would improve on what we already have.
Being in favour of what we already have doesn’t make you a Royalist – just a realist.
London recently voted for a mayor....need I say more

I don't especially give a toss about the jubilee, but I enjoyed the days off.

Also, people who like complaining about things and being miserable will find something to complain about and be miserable about every day of the year. People who like celebrating things, being happy, and sharing that occasion and happiness with others, don't often get the chance to do so with one and a half million other people. So let them have their chance.

I even went to a street party. Because there was a barbecue and I like food.

I watched some news today and I have to say it was a tad depressing to find that notwithstanding the Jubilee celebrations the euro is still going down the toilet and lots of people round the world are still killing other people.

I even found myself thinking that it would be nice if the news could concentrate on something that helped people feel happy friendly and united. Like Jubilee stuff.

Obviously that might not work for republicans but bollocks to them!! I say. If they come round my gaff I'll let them have it with the old 12 bore.

Extra armour fitted for atlantic convoys, as one of the veterans on the programme pointed out to an interviewer who couldn't be less interested.

Hood was nevertheless a cruiser, Thor - a battle-one. And if you wish to be precise, Belfast was a light cruiser.

Interestingly, HMS Iron Duke has been a battleship in the 1870's a pre-WWI battleship, and lately a Frigate. So there.

I'm not even interested in military history, I can't explain why I remember this stuff.

I say let's grow up and go Republican, or we will never rid ourselves of the class system.

And the BBC coverage of the River Pageant was appaling:

"Over 1000 ships" - Nope they are all boats.

"HMS Belfast at 91,000 tons the largest cruiser ever built" - wrong again, 12,00 tons, sometimes 14,000 - at 91,000 tons it would be as big as an American Aircraft Carrier and would have to be broken up to pass through Tower Bridge. By the way HMS Hood was the largest ever cruiser built at 48,000 tons. See what a childhood building Airfix kits does for you.

Unfortunately we were all so busy lining our pockets we failed to watch the Jubly but friends in Australia and New Zealand tell me it was jolly good.

Also a work ethic built around afternoon naps, late suppers, and 3day benders because an obscure saint happened to have their head chopped off on this very day 937 years ago.

Spain that is, not Scotland.

In the fine tradition of Alfred the Great and Charles the Bald with their charming little sobriquets, Scotland would be likely to go for the dynasty featuring Eric the Idle, Billy the Pottymouth, Sean the Wifeslapper, Gordon the Moron and Tony the Cnut.

bah humbug from me.

I hear frequently that the royal family bring in eleventy billion pounds a year worth of tourist money, or whatever. Even though they say this I doubt that even half of the tourists who come to the UK actually get to meet the Queen.

Still Paris does even better than London for tourism money, perhaps they can give us some advice about dealing with an expensive and unnecesary royal family?

We can have pride in our country without needing some old posh woman sitting at the top of it pretending to be in charge.

Lynch mobs in Egypt, massacres in Syria, bomb blasts in Nigeria, death squads in Mexico, rape and murder in DRCongo, repression in far east, Taliban waiting in the wings across middle east, compulsory flag waving in N.Korea.....be careful what you wish for when condemning the antiquated British way of life.
They all joined in of their own accord....hope everybody gets home safely.
