Struth! Fair dinkum to the ostrich, DB's flounce makes me think that the baastard is a bloody poofter.

Also: Taking the piss out of the Aussie stereotype is still pretty mainstream and didn't die out with Barry McKenzie or Crocodile Dundee. It still works for Dame Edna and Fosters. I'd take Rolf much more seriously if he drunk and swore a lot.

Ironically, I'm sat here on five bar gate in Dorset wearing a white smocked top and chewing on a piece of straw. Perhaps I should call myself Sydneyboy. Ooh Aar.

Enjoyed the story, loved the liberal application of Australian English.

Detected no insult the first time round, just a delight in the cabinet of curiosities that every dialect contains.

Stronger still, and stranger still, I totally misread DorsetBoy's response as ironic. Sorry, DB.

As a former linguist who keeps a watch on post-colonial dialectology/lexicography projects, it's not hard to demonstrate that the vocabulary is identifiably and uniquely Australasian.

And, for what it's worth, I had an uncle in NZ who spoke pretty much like this. He would've read the story, and asked 'So, what's so bloody funny about a frontbum getting back into gummint then?'

Hi Paper Ostrich. Thanks for your reasoned response, credit to you. My words were harsh, and I'll apologise for that. Getting an FP post is a great achievement, I've had the same joy so my snarky response probably detracted from that.

But my point remains, in over 20 years out here I've never met or heard anyone who speaks as you depict in your post, not even my father-in-law and he's a real ocker. Newsbiscuit usually deplores posts that rely on 1970s stereotypes of gays, Irish, non-white people etc. Quite frankly my dear Ossie, I found your post in the same vein.

So let's leave it there, depart in peace and leave the trolls to get on with it.

Cheers.

Thanks most.

I don't like to get too serious on here as it seems to lead to all sorts of flouncing, but I am bound to defend this sub a little. It's not my greatest ever work. It does describe Julia Gillard as a "squawking harridan". But it's not full of 'insulting' stereotypes - it uses Australian slang and I maintain that's different. The idea came to me after I saw this . And it emerged from a conversation with a couple of work colleagues who are Australian. They liked it.

As I say I don't want to get too worthy. But I bridled a little at the suggestions you made DorsetBoy because a) I don't go in for negative, insulting comedy as I hope my subs show; and b) I often don't like stuff that makes it on here, but I prefer to keep my counsel rather than insult the work publicly. Example: despite being rarely offended, I was a bit upset to see "cure for depression hailed as man pulls self together and gets on with it" the other day. I thought that was insulting and patronising, but you know what? It's not the end of the world, and the more we douse the less likely we are to push the boundaries.

Anyway, whinge over. I'll bear the impression it gave in mind. Didn't want to cause a stoush.

Pretty disappointed to see this sad contribution making it to the front page. I'm pretty sure humour and wit used to be a requirement around here.

Or are cliched, inaccurate, unfunny, insulting stereotypes all the rage now in your little backwater ?

Australian prime minister Julia Gillard has won a leadership stoush among Labor MPs in Canberra, cementing her position as a squawking harridan in charge of the distant colony.

Ms Gillard clobbered the Foreign Minister, Kevin Rudd, who had the flamin gall to launch a leadership bid after walking right out of the bloody Cabinet, would you believe. ‘Jeez, I’m mad as a cut snake with that bastard,’ Gillard squawked after she stonkered the poor bloke by 71 votes to 31 at a meeting of the Labor parliamentary caucus. ‘Still, I got me a bleedin’ ripsnorter of a result, and now I’m gettin on with the biznis of gavernment.’

Gillard denied that her public persona had damaged her chances of winning the next election against Opposition leader Tony Abbott, widely seen as a ripper larrikin. ‘It’s London to a brick that we’ll woip the floor with those bastards at the nixt eliction,’ insisted Gillard. She became the first sheila to serve as prime minister when she ousted Rudd in 2010, after low poll ratings indicated that the public considered him about as useful as tits on a bull.

Rudd was gracious in defeat. ‘Fair dinkum, she put in the yakka and she whackered me good and proper, the tin-arsed jillaroo,’ he said in a dignified concession speech. ‘Oi’m going out tonight to hit the turps, and then when Oi’ve sobered up Oi’ll rack off to the backbenches and let her give it a burl.’

Latest polls suggest that Labor is losing ground to the Opposition, and Ms Gillard’s main challenge is to rebuild her popularity among the middle classes, as well as her core vote of sheilas and cobbers who haven’t got a brass razoo.
