Neither of you were polite enough to credit me though! Fortunately I employ Big Vern for just these eventualities, so expect a knock at the door soon (hat tip to Viz).

Tricky chap, Johnny plagiarism. On the one hand, writers are bound to come up with the same ideas. On the other, it does seem to be good stuff from comments and the one line subs that don't make the subs that are more likey to turn up on TV/Radio, which is suspect. But once a gag is spoken or hits the net isn't it open source? A credit would be polite though.

(All my own thoughts. Honest! It's just that I didn't have time to post them yesterday, and now it looks like some bastard has beaten me to it!)

I didn't watch it, but have they kept Lauren Laverne? She was completely, completely shit in the first series. Awful. Really, really stank. Dreadful. Less funny than suicide. The comedy timing, and ability to read aloud, of a house plant.

Quite pretty, though.

Plagiarism is from the Latin plagiarius meaning kidnapper, maybe 10 O'Clock Live will send round a ransom note demanding cash for the safe return of your jokes? Or they will start posting chopped up bits of jokes in the writers room.

Hang on, it was my idea of crashing 2 stories together! No-one has done it before I mentioned it a year ago. Except that mine don't usually have hilarious consequences.

I guess it depends on the joke. If you go down the route of 'pick two big stories of the week and crash them together with hilarious consequences', then several people are bound to come up with the same gags at the same time.

It seems to be a very common method of writing satire/parody, so I guess it's inevitable. I'd hate someone to think I'd nicked something, so if I think of something that seems a bit obvious then I don't bother developing it in case it comes across as 'samey'.

Which is probably why no-one reads anything I write.

Sinnick

I know. But if they're going to nick material off here, why don't they be honest about it?

Why not give Newsbiscuit a writing credit?

They pay people to script their jokes. If the writers are nicking the jokes, surely they're superfluous.

All they need is a jokes editor who spends all day hoovering gags off sites like Newsbiscuit. Personally, I wouldn't mind if a gag was borrowed as long as they credited the writer.

It's a bit much when the Show's writers are actually paid, and you know they've nicked the material off the web.

To start with, the one I posted about Capello and Syria, picked up by simonjmr in his truly excellent FP.

To be honest, we've discussed this before: some think it's plagiary, some think it's flattery. For me, it's the latter.

I really doubt there's a comedian capable of writing totally original material, all the time. If a joke's written elsewhere, how else am I going to see it ?

You know how gag writers for topical shows often nick gags from (sorry, have the same ideas as) Newsbiscuit?

Why don't TV producers just officially source gags from this site?

Surely, that would encourage more writers to post up gags.

And it would save them money too. They could sack the plagiarists and buy direct. Maybe chuck the occasional bone in our/your direction by donating a fraction of the money they would be saving.

Come on you comedy fat cats. Pay for your gags, instead of stealing them.

If you did, who knows what karmic benefits you might enjoy.

People might even start taking your points about 'greedy bankers' a bit more seriously.
