Jim Fletcher from Grimsby got more than he bargained for when he used his new sat nav unit for the first time. For instead of being taken to his local chippy in the high street to get tea for him and his wife, Doris, the hapless hairdresser ended up in Quebec Canada.

He told us. "Doris bought the unit for me for my birthday so I thought I'd give it a go and see if it got me to the chippy round the corner by the quickest route. It's only about mile and a half from our house but I realised that something was amiss when I spotted a sign that said Welcome to Manchester.

It did seem to me that 90 minutes on the road was rather excessive to go round the corner, but that wasn't the half of it! Next thing it says to me "Proceed to the airport and then buy a business class ticket to Quebec", so of course I did. I know it sounds a bit silly now, but I mean they're meant to be always right aren't they?

Anyway, cutting a long story short, in the end I ended up in Quebec. Doris wasn't too best pleased when I called her and told her what had happened. She had to have a tin of baked beans on toast as she was starving by then and we hadn't got anything else in. What a palaver!"

When asked if he didn't think that perhaps something was wrong with the sat nav, Jim replied. "Not really, as it was a brand new unit I knew that it couldn't possibly be faulty"

Jim's now counting the cost of his trip to the chippy as it's set him back a cool £2500. "I think I'll leave the sat nav at home next time" he quipped.
