You have all misunderstood. This Eu treaty thing is totally binary. You must either state that it's a stroke of genius, or that we're going to hell in a handcart. There is no inbetween. Thats what the BBC have led me to believe anyway.

Whether it's a good or a bad call will remain to be seen, but I think it's nowhere near as big a deal as the media have made out.

What Cameron has basically said is that the financial problems of the Eurozone shouldn't need to be dealt with by those EU members who didn't opt to become part of the Eurozone. And why didn't we opt into the Eurozone? Because we didn't fancy having such close financial ties to the weaker EU economies.

All we've done is left them to sort out their own mess. If they'd used the EU as a vehicle to prop up the Euro then all sorts of new EU financial regulations would be devised and implemented which may or may not affect the UK. What we've done is stopped them using the EU as that vehicle and they're basically forming their own 'save the Euro' club. In that club, they can make any rules for themselves that they want to and they won't apply to the UK.

"Ed looks like a worse bet for Labour election prospects than Michael Foot (try google)” Jesus ate the cake, am I the only person on here old enough to remember Foot?

It probably shouldn't be VCG, but there has to be an element of 'sales pitch' involved if you're trying to garner public support that will turn into votes.

Ed looks like a worse bet for Labour election prospects than Michael Foot (try google), who at least sounded as if he was reading his own lines. And believed what he was saying. I watched part of Ed's performance today and he looked and sounded like a reluctant actor in a school play who hadn't bothered to rehearse; or even read the lines in advance.

Ed's front benchers have that slightly frozen faced caught-in-the- headlights look. I imagine them thinking 'WTF have we been landed with here?'. Emperor's suit of clothes stuff. I wonder which of them is going to blink first and suggest jetisoning the Hapless One. I don't tarticularly hold a brief for Labour but would like to see some believable opposition.

Like it.

I know politics shouldn't just be a popularity contest, but can anybody really take Ed Miliband seriously?

well, to be honest, they barely had much more than a decade (ish) so you can hardly blame them. Ed Balls seems to have a lot of good ideas - if only he himself had been in any sort of position of power/decision making role how different things might have been.

your right, then they would have 'negotiated' a better deal. whatever that means.
if only they would have been so perfect in power

I understand that Labour have indicated that they wouldn't have signed up for it either. Maybe I got that from a Tory media outlet though. Hmm.

Nice.

Does anyone actually have a clue whether this was a good or bad call? I guess history will tell, but I have no idea whatsoever. It seems both sensible and stupid at the same time.
