A massive media hunt to track down the missing businessman Sir Mark Thatcher is not under way.

Sir Mark hasn’t been seen or heard or even spoken of since November when a British mercenary who led a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea said he would expose the ex-Prime Minister’s son’s role in the plot.

Unlike the air and land search that was launched when Sir Mark got lost 30 years ago on a motor rally in the Sahara desert, hundreds of police and soldiers have not been deployed.

Lack of interest about Sir Mark’s whereabouts surged five months ago when failed coup leader Simon Mann was freed and vowed to reveal Sir Mark Thatcher’s role in the attempted Government overthrow.

Since then, there has been no sightings at all of the pair in any newspaper or on TV and radio and observers admit they are baffled.

“I can’t imagine where they went,” said a member of the public who asked not to be named. “One minute Mark Thatcher wasn’t there and the next he, er, wasn’t there either.

“By now there should have been blanket coverage of Sir Mark’s activities. We would have expected to see television interviews, a book, a newspaper serialisation and possibly a film script.

“But despite weeks spent scouring the media, we have not found a trace of them. We’re getting seriously concerned. We don’t know how much longer anyone as well known as Sir Mark Thatcher can survive out there without the oxygen of publicity.”
