Well, I'm a tad older than Arfla. I didn't have the experiences he describes but recall our school remembrance day services to which the families of 'old boys' who didn't make it were invited and the sobbing of mothers in our midst.

I only speak for moi but I am more then pleased to buy the annual poppies and have on occasion been known to make the odd donation to 'Help for Heroes'. I am grateful for the relative freedoms we enjoy in the UK and for those who contributed to that end. That includes my aircraft fitter father and tank driving father-in-law - a gentler kinder man you would be hard-pressed to find. A man whose outlook on life appeared to have ben forever changed by the experience of pitching up at Belsen shortly after it was liberated.

That doesn't mean I have to agree with poppy-mania or the farce this week about poppies on football kits which had a strong whiff of the bandwagon creaking through Westminster.

The sheer lack of knowledge and education on display here is pitiful.

The poppy appeal was started in 1915 to help the war wounded survive, at a time when they were generally reduced to selling matches on the street.

As a child of about seven, for some reason, I was chosen along with another boy from my school to visit Linburn, ( must have been about 1962) where the Scottish War Blind were looked after by funds raised on poppy day.

I was utterly horrified,on entering the room where they made the poppies, nothing had been said about the reality of WWI and fourty years of suffering;

Lines of old men all with terrible wounds, with faces, hands, legs missing, seated at long tables, slowly and painfully assembling poppies from boxes of green wire and paper flowers etc, as best they could, as they had done every year since 1918 or something.

I was almost speechless with rage and chocked with tears, I managed to blurt out to the blind old man to whom I had been introduced something like " why do you have to do this? why can't they look after you properly?"

"Never Heed, son, we're the lucky ones," said the old man with such humility that I could not at the time fathom.

But he wasn't taking Government money, the Government that had sent almost an entire generation to be slaughtered for no known reason, he was being looked after by the people of Scotland and going about his humble task year after year with the comfort he and the others were not forgotten entirely.

I understand that pensions and state care are rather better these days but the poppy appeal is the people looking after their own, it will be a sad day when that dies out, as it surely will, if this is anything to go by.

People fought and died for your right to post stories on here, and this is how you thank them? Shame on you...

Good stuff.

Have the Sun got a full on campaign in support of the England poppy kit under way yet? You'd think Murdoch would jump at the chance to try and get people to like him.

Poppy appeal bosses were today locked in behind-closed-door meetings, rumoured to be planning their most contrived, yet undeniably righteous, guilt-trip publicity stunt ever, say sources, as the public mood swings ever toward support for our heroes.

Details remain unconfirmed, but it is thought that the stunt will centre around a tabloid campaign to make public figures wear full-face rubber poppy masks for the duration of Armistice Day, November 11th or risk being denounced as unpatriotic, pro-terrorist cowards.

A Poppy-Masks-for-our-Heroes spokesman said that "sincere support and fund raising are now secondary to our ability to bully people into ideological purity. What counts is affirming out position as the premium charity brand in a crowded market space".

Unsuccessful attempts to harry FIFA into accepting a last minute change to the England soccer strip has only redoubled the Poppy cult's ambitions to portray anyone who seeks to deploy their charity spend elsewhere as an insidious traitor and siding with Osama Bin Laden.

Former 'Going For Gold' host Henry Kelly confided that if he doesn't wear the rubber mask that day - when he's due to open a Lidl in Chessington, Surrey, he worries that he may become a pariah on the supermarket circuit, despite all the good work he does for lost dogs and lepers.

Martin Blake, a shame equity consultant, whispered "The Poppy Appeal has a unique power to command a 'with us or against us' market position in a way that Cancer Research or Dr Barnardos just doesn't. Nobody assumes that someone without a pink ribbon is in favour of breast cancer, yet we have managed to convince almost every echelon of society that a poppyless man is a soldier-hating bastard cunt, and that's the kind of brand momentum you can't afford to lose."
