In a break with tradition this year’s Children In Need will feature several BBC Newsreaders dressed in outrageous two piece suits and actually reading the news.

Some of the BBC's best-loved names will ditch their more accustomed roles as members of the cast of “Grease” or taking part in an excruciatingly long extract from “We Will Rock You” and will instead be reading from an autocue and making inane comments to Chris Hollins.

A Head of Light Entertainment, who declined to be named, said “This may shock some members of the ordinary viewing public, but these men and women are more than just bad singers and dancers – they can sit and read out someone else’s words with the best of them”.

Old Etonian Bill Turnbull last night confessed to being at little nervous with his new role adding “Obviously my comfort zone is wearing a leather jacket and singing”well-a well-a well-a tell me more” with Jeremy Bowen and Charlie Stait, but anything for the kiddies. And don’t worry it will be back to normal next year when Suzanna Reid stars in a remake of “Debbie Does Dallas” for Comic Relief. And now over to Rob McElwee for the weather”
