Martin Fletcher responded tonight to Sir Oliver Popplewell's stinging rebuke as to his cricket run rate

"It's true, I did not make me school XI. Although my school did indeed have cricket fields, even a full floodlit athletics track & a long jump sand box, I was always a rugger boy myself, although I did also play Guard at American Football when we painted one playing field & I protected my Quarterback - You see I always found you could do much more damage to someone from the front row or the line of scrimmage than from the crease"

However in an an attempt at reconciliation Fletcher did confirm that he would be spending the festive period in South Beach once more & suggested Sir Oliver join him in South Florida "I plan on training in the refurbished 5th Street Gym over Christmas & New Year - I do hope Ollie can join me for a few rounds of Queensbury public school sparring, or is it true he's had enough already?"

Sir Oliver was unavailable for comment in his Brick(it) Street Chambers last night, reportedly stunned into silence at the thought that someone could be both a rugby and football fan ... It's seems the world is a changing

In other news scientists confirmed that contrary to fears in recent days dinosaurs are indeed extinct, even if the lack of a popular revolution in English history may give an impression to the contrary... Damned Establishmentais

Former judge Sir Oliver Popplewell has rubbished Bradford City fire survivor Martin Fletcher's attack on his recent outspoken comments about the Hillsborough tragedy, claiming someone with no credible batting history cannot possibly be taken seriously.

Sir Oliver, who played in 41 first-class matches and scored 881 runs at an average of 20.48, wrote in a letter to The Times that families bereaved by events at Hillsborough are 'habouring conspiracy theories' and compared their reaction negatively to that of the survivors of the Bradford City fire.

Fletcher, who was 12 when he survived the fire, described some of Sir Oliver's comments as 'an absolute travesty of the truth and a disgrace'.

Sir Oliver repeated his challenge: "Go on, how many runs?"

"Bet he didn't even make his school's 1st XI. Or maybe his school didn't even play cricket. Damn riff-raff."
