I also like Miranda but Slippy Parsons makes my skin crawl. Have you noticed that he refers to himself as Sir Nicolas Parsons on JAM now? Slimey weasel.

I actually quite like Miranda myself but wanted to include a new sitcom - and be honest, it is getting a bit repetitive. Rude!

Miranda's actually good. She's a clever writer. Have a root around the Vicar of Dibley for some single-ply tissue-thin gags.

I think that NP was a 'straight man' to some comic(s) in the 1950s and has unfortunately continued in much the same vein ever since.

But - did you ever see 'Rosemary & Thyme'? That must surely rate at least an honorable nomination

Personally I have no problem with Girls on Top. Particularly if they're in the plural. And all the better if they're thin.

Like it.

And I'm glad Miranda was included in here. I saw about 5 minutes of it once, and it seemed to consist entirely of a slightly odd-looking woman saying things that aren't funny, then looking at the camera and pulling faces while a laughter track played.

I was worried that it might actually be the cutting edge of comedy and I was just out of touch and didn't understand.

A furious row has broken out over the whereabouts of the thinnest material in the known universe. ‘It’s in the final series of the geriatric TV sitcom ‘Last of the Summer Wine’’ a Southampton University professor of gags insisted.

But a lecturer in punchlines at East Anglia maintained the accolade definitely belonged to every programme in the series,’ My Family.’

The argument became international when an academic from the American Comedy College made a strong case for the US Matt Le Blanc vehicle ‘Joey’. ‘Material don’t get much thinner than that,’ he drawled.

But a PhD student at the Liverpool Institute of Stand Up begged to differ. ‘You guys are stuck in the past,’ he said. ‘Contemporary research proves beyond doubt the thinnest material by far is in the second series of ‘Miranda’.’

The debate would have raged on without a timely intervention from June Whitehead, the Visiting Professor of Funny Writing at Oxford, who urged her fellow academics to look to radio for the answer:

‘I think we can all agree, Nicolas Parsons’ script on ‘Just A Minute’ beats the others into a cocked hat,’ she said. ‘His jokes aren’t just thin, they’re completely invisible to the naked eye.’
