Quaz, I think to lend someone a book, you have to set up a Facebook-y user group, so they get money out of it somehow (advertsing). I won't be doing that. Most of the stuff I read would be completely uninteresting to my friends. (When I refer to friends, my brother Brian always says "you mean people who feel sorry for you?")

I use my Sony Ereader all the time. I've had it nearly two years now, and being "carful" with my money, have only downloaded free, out of copyright works.

I thoroughly recommend the works of Jack London - really readable for stuff that's a hundred years old.

Really? I thought the point of them from the publishers point of view was to stop that sort of thing. Is it only the free books you can 'loan'?

I have to say that I like the practice of some publishers now of putting maybe the first chapter online as a taster. It has certainly drawn me into the odd book, like standing in a bookshop and reading the first bit to see if it's up your street.

I like to feel the roughness of the paper, and feel the texture of the cover of a book.

Sure, an ebook is more portable etc, but just lacks the soul that a book has.

When I received it, it had a couple of books pre-loaded, one of which was one of stunt's books. My Dad, who gave me the Kindle, had no idea of the connection so it was kind of nice that it was the first book I read on it.

And Quaz, you are in no position to talk about washing hands. I'm still trying to get those chocolate finger marks off of the biscuit tin.

Jeni, remind me to wash my hands after using your Kindle. A friend in Manhatten who moves around a lot has embarked upon a process of digitising everything so that all he has to move is a few hard drives and a laptop and scanner. He loves his kindle, because it saves him carting books from place to place, and his photo album is all stored in the cloud on flickr.

Rikkor, I thing you may be right. Whe I was a kid I read Issac Azimov and he talked about kit like this and I thought it was great. The older I get though, I feel a strange attachment to vinyl records and print. An older friend, director of an IT company, thinks that there is an age divide between people who are happy living with digital media stored in a cloud, vs owning a physical object.

It is nice to have a book though, you can lend it out.

In the US, my "newest" Nook was US $130. There are a gazillion of free and $0.99 books available through Barnes and Noble. And, when you link to your local library, everything is free. I don't travel for work anymore, but it would be invaluable for that. I can't stand being without a book for a minute.

Like it or not (and, I resisted it); it's the way the world is going.

I was given a Kindle for my birthday, and to be honest, while it's lighter to carry around than a book, I prefer an actual book.

I can't help but lick my finger every time I go to 'turn' a page.

I have an almost complete set of the first 50 Peanuts comic strip collection books from my childhood.

The tempting thing about some kind of ebook reader is that lots of stuff out of copyright is available for free, or so I heard. Thats's a lot of classics, but you would have to read a lot to earn back the outlay on the reader. How much are they charging for downloads of new books? It seemed that some of them are not far short of the price of a printed book, which is nice to keep.

My Anglophilia isn't suppressed, it's just not blind and worshipful. Have to look up "You're Sitting Under My Eyeslashes". No idea what that is. Mine is a Nook. Being vy. cheap at times, it allows me to get e-books for free from the local library. (Which place, in short order, will no longer exist as a building with people holding jobs therein.)

God this takes me back. There was a follow up called 'And Now All This' I seem to recall. I must have had weird taste in books when a kid, as I read anything that was in the house.

Others that spring to mind are the complete works of James Thurber and 'You're Sitting on my Eyelashes' by Whitney Darrow. (we lived near Upper Heyford).

I thought the Sony e-reader thingy looked nice, but Amazon seem to have taken over.

My "Rikkor is a Good Thing" comment on the moratorium thread was supposed to be a reference to that book.

The first one immediately becomes 100% of your collection (and will forever be your first) so there's always a lot of pressure to choose well. If it comes well recommended or you've already had experience in another format, I guess it's more of a known quantity, and the risk is reduced. But it's an easy choice to fuck up so probably best to play it safe.

Can we trace your suppressed Anglophilia to that early exposure? Or is that not how it works?

Broke down and used my E-reader for the first time today. Owned it for 2 months, complete psychological wall built up. Got "1066" for first book. I probably read it first when I was 9 years old, didn't get 90% of the jokes then, but made me want to learn more. Still great. Especially Richard, Coeur de Laitue.
