Does anyone else remember the Harry Enfield character "Only me"?
He was the guy who kept popping up and advising people on how they were doing something wrong.
I believe his catch phrase was "You don't want to do it that way! You want to do it like this!" before proving once again that while he understood in principle what was to be done, he was beyond inept at putting it into action.

Not that I'm suggesting anything about anyone.

Now doing good and feeling miserable about it - that's true altruism. Think of Bob Geldof.

I will take you up on your omellette! I have to say that I grudgingly admit his recipes are good, despite their mockney writing style. It's just the hypocrisy, self-promotion and flakey cooking implements that I object to.

Wayland, next time you're in Cornwall, come round to mine for dinner. In the basement at Fraser Towers I keep a retinue of poorly-paid economic migrants who knock up a mean omelette, and all you have to do is patronise them a little bit. They're so grateful. If you patronise them enough they make you feel like a celebrity chef.

My reaction was to get out to a decent pub as quickly as possible, and harbour an ever-growing resentment. I think that's the official approach advocated by the CAB.

Don't get me started on his 'steamed salmon and Thai salad' experiments in Rotherham. If he really wanted to help, he'd have shown them how to make a stew, or a sandwich. But that wouldn't have shown off his cooking skills...he is an expert in self-publicity.

Wayland - I'm sorry you had that experience. But my reaction would have been to send the meal back as unacceptable, regardless of who had created it. Its the head chef's job to make sure that shit like that never leaves the kitchen. I'm sure that if you sent a picture of the food to Jamie Oliver he'd have been down there like a ton of bricks. I'd have asked for the chef or the maitre d' to come to the table - and ask him to his face whether he or she thought this is acceptable.

I've had bad food in supposedly good restaurants and my reaction has been the same - send it back and give me proper food or I walk. And on a couple of occasions I have walked. In the Netherlands, the home of bad service, I've walked out many times. The few restaurants that do have good food and good service were patronized regularly and often.

There is a "tall poppy" syndrome that is particularly prevalent in the UK and Australia. Anyone who rises above mediocrity gets slammed. Its like a sexual fetish to want to see successful people brought down to the rest of us duffers.

Someone has recently opened a Costa Coffee in the high street near me. I went in, sampled the food and the ambience and talked to the owner about what has worked for me and what is very wrong (its too dark and loud in there for a start). He was really grateful for the feedback and agreed with the criticisms.

I think the worst thing to do is accept substandard food or service and silently seethe about the owner. Best to let them know you're not happy and see what happens. The best and most courteous thing I know to do in any food establishment is let them know if something is good or bad, because usually the owners are truly grateful for people to actually say if there's something wrong rather than just leave never to return.

I'm hungry now...more later.

I think there's always a tendency to view anybody doing 'good deeds' with suspicion as you assume it's either for their own benefit, or for their own ego.

I don't mind Jamie Oliver, and just look at all the good he's done - Sainsbury's have overtaken Asda as the UK's second biggest supermarket thanks to having him advertise them. And has he gained anything out of that deal? Selfless he is, I tell you.

Apparently he's also done something or other for kids or homeless badgers or something.

JohnA: I was once forced to eat in his cornish 'fifteen'. It was a moment of clarity: 'I'm paying through the nose for burnt shit, and I can't complain because the poor dears that work here have a tendency to go scrumping for cars, or eat heroin. Jamie is nowhere to be seen, I've just been patronised by a 15 year-old who has told me where potatoes come from with a straight face, and the whole charade is a registered charity so 'Jamie' doesn't pay tax on it. Shitshitshitshitshit. I hate being tricked by these bastards'.

But that's just my opinion, obviously.

The only thing with the idea is that for satire to work, there has to be a grain of truth in the "All About Me" concept. It would work for Gordon Ramsey, Marco Pierre White or Nick Rhodes. I'm not convinced that Jamie is that egotistical, even when he has every right to be.

I have to admit I like Jamie Oliver a lot. I think the 'Fifteen' concept is completely brilliant and judging by his latest series, he's not afraid to look like a complete wally to get his message across.

That doesn't mean we can't send him up. Especially as he comes from Essex.
