While environmentalists call on Generation-X and Baby Boomers to "Save the planet for your children and grandchildren", parents are just asking their children to turn off the lights occasionally. Other suggestions as to how children and teens can save the planet for their future have been made into a handy list, available on Facebook and as a mobile phone download. They include:

- Not having the TV on while using the laptop and using the mobile phone simultaneously.

- Stop aimlessly driving around in a 1990s hatchback full of Halfords bling, sodcasting bad R&B to the world though speakers in the boot, while littering the countryside with McDonalds packaging.

- Wear a sensible cardigan and turn down the central heating.

- Reduce washing machine and iron use by not leaving your clothes in piles scattered over the bedroom floor.

Teenagers have been responding via Twitter with their own suggestions."I don't waste valuable water resources by showering or brushing my teeth" Tweeted one pubescent boy, while a teenage girl pointed out that "I am doing my bit by cultivating bio-diversity in my bedroom with the collection of apple-cores, used plates/cups and random half-eaten food stuffs which are left there to evolve naturally."

Some academics have argued that teenagers are actually quite energy efficient, due to staying in bed for half of the day. They also expend as little energy as possible on hard consonants, while shrugging shoulders in a frequent manner that could be harnessed to generate electricity.

In one study, by attaching pedometers to the wrists of teenage boys it has been ascertained that the average teenage male arm travels over ten miles a week when indulging in onanistic activities. If it were attached to a small electrical generation device, then it could provide enough energy to power the average home for a day. The generator, currently being designed by the University of Athens, will be called the Paedometer.
