Yes, that's because they're produced by Saltire, the fairy prince of unfunny.

JohnA: I started with a flurry of what I thought were funnies. First headline was a ticker, got a NIb and a few more tickers then, when it became laboured, I mostly stopped. Hope to have a funny turn again soon. I thought my funniest was taking a story about that chap off Bullseye and relacing the word "Stroke" with "Joke". http://newsbiscuit.com/forum/topic.php?id=21622 Worked for me but was not very widely admired. Keep up the good work but let it flow when you are feeling witty and don't bother when you have to try hard. That's my only advise. Oh, and do a draft in word first so you don't get embarrassed by typos.

JohnA, I have always found "funny" to be more of a particle than a wave. But some quantum mechanics boffins will try to convince you it can be both at the same time. Nutters!

Hope this helps.

"There's nothing funny to be found trawling through the latrines of Glastonbury."

Not true. My mate was having a shit in a Glastonbury toilet and on the floor he saw a sausage-sized turd with an England flag sticking out of it.

Says so much in my book. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Good reply, Wallster.

I suppose with increased creativity I can go to the next stage of writing a 'news brief' and being violently ignored.

It's all a matter of progression.

Also I find that a lot of the humour is very forced. How, for the sake of example, could the death of a man on a Portaloo at Glastonbury be remotely funny? There's no irony to be found in that news item, its just sad.

Not all of it is forced.

The recent FA's have shown great wit and creativity and I salute them - you bastards.

I tend to have an idea, kick it around in my head for a little while trying to think of some jokes that will go with it, and then spend about 15 minutes writing it. Which is why mine are often light on jokes, or not particularly tidy.

I'm funny all the time. Just not necessarily in a news based format. You have to appreciate that we can't all be as good, consistent and smug as the WoM legends, but if you're hitting Saltire's level of funny then you're doing just fine.

Take notes, polish ideas and only sub when you're totally happy with it. Don't sub half baked ideas. Comedians will be comedians' harshest critics and we'll jump like electrocuted nuns on lazy, cliched writing.

Keep subbing the stuff that makes you laugh and don't worry if some other people don't like it, many will. I'd hate to be as funny as Michael MacIntwat, but I know other people think he's hysterical, bless 'em. They are of course, all entirely wrong, and I'm right. Always.

Personally it's all about the mood i'm in but even in good mood it doesn't exactly make me any good, which is quite evident on reading any of my contributions.
