Eric Pickles, has been forced to admit he cannot compel the European Space Agency to collect the refuse from the International Space Station more often.

The ESA announced that the ATV-Johannes Kepler ship which took 1.3 tonnes of rubbish from the space station into a controlled dive into the atmosphere just before 2100 GMT on Tuesday, and the next pickup wouldn't be back until 2013/14.

Previously Mr Pickles said "that it was a basic right for every Englishman and woman to be able to put the remnants of their tikka chicken masala without having to wait two years for it to be collected,"

Downing Street later confirmed that the the last English astronaut Richard Allen Garriott visited in 2008 and had in fact taken his own rubbish home with him.
