I can't believe I've waded through four pages of this stuff, as well as another page of five-month-old subs AND 30 seconds of grainy YouTube film.

There ought to be a TV programme for people like you lot.

PS Tried for satire, to remind us why we're all here, but you'll have to make do with sarcasm.

I run a 10 year old peugeot 406, during the week, very reliable but tatty looking. I don't need to worry about someone scratching it in the supermaket car park etc.
Cheap to run too. I usually buy one with about 80-90k on the clock for about £700,
only do basic maintenance, oil/air filter change/empty ashtray. Then scrap it for £100 after 2 years with 160+ k on the clock. works out at about 1p per mile capital cost and allows me also not to give a damn about the car.
The Cobra though, thats a different story, each time I go out, its fun, fun, fun.
Capital cost probably 50p mile. running cost 30p/mile divided by grin factor, makes it worthwhile.
I wouldnt let it out of my sight though.

When I was at school a friend of mine bought a Hyundai Pony for £50. It didn't lock and you could start it with a screwdriver, but it got him from A to B so he was happy enough with it. The only trouble was that all his friends knew you could start it with a screwdriver, so it never stayed where he parked it.

I think it finally packed up and he set fire to it, which I believe is the accepted method for getting rid of old cars isn't it?

I did enjoy owning a 2CV many years back. I had a hammer and a screw driver as a tool kit. I once sorted out the throttle linkage with a spring from a pen. Now you look under a bonnet and there's just a big lump of metal with a warning sign saying, "Fuck off". Look at me talking like I know how to open a bonnet. I'm with the Duke on cars. If they go where you point them and stop when you want them to, no more is required.

Jeni, this isn't or at least wasn't just a thread about cars. It started out with a send-up of BMW drivers, which Rikkor waded into with the old 'you're just jealous' routine and I and others came back with 'no we aren't', from which it went off in many other directions (fnarr fnarr).

I do not need to convince myself that I don't give a toss about cars because I don't. I wish others didn't but I accept that some do. I'm sure you don't judge everyone on their car but the proverbial BMW driving twat does and that's my point.

But don't worry I still love you...

I drive a golf. It has rotary arm-exercisers linked to the window uppy-downyness; it predates central locking and the front seats fold forward to put people in the back. When I put my key in the slotty thing by the side of the wheel, a slightly weakly broom noise happens with astonishing regularity, and it tootles me my 15minute drive to work and back.
That pretty much wholly summarises my use, joy and enthusiasm for cars.

In the 90s I had a BMW 5 series on test drive for a week. Filling it up at the garage, a portly chap in a suit walked up and asked if I'd like to join the local Rotary Club. There, proves it.
PS: Is this ever, ever going to end?

I saw a BMW X5 go right round a roundabout this morning without indicating, no surprise there then. Then as he came round to an exit he indicated right, which shocked me because I thought he had worked out what the little stick on the side of the steering wheel was for and was signalling his intention to continue round the roundabout. But then he took the exit, while still indicating right.

Marks for effort though, at least he gave it a go.

Better than the van being a write-off.

Oxy, I'm a real petrol-head. I love cars, I love how fast they can go, I love the sound they make, and I love the thrill I get from driving a really good car very quickly around a race-track.
I don't actually judge anyone by their car, house, job etc. I do judge them by their attitude.

I also know my own mind. In fact, almost every school report I ever had said I knew my own mind, and wasn't afraid to let everyone else know it.
Nor have I ever been one of the in-crowd, this is through choice.
You're responses have become increasingly like you are trying to convince yourself.

I don't really care whether you like cars or not, but really, if you don't like them perhaps a sub discussing cars isn't for you.

I'm probably repeating myself but here goes anyway. I have a Skoda Fabia - I'd rather not have any car at all, but I have a family and there's no realistic choice - and there are three things I ilke about it:

a) it's relatively inexpensive to run and maintain
b) it gets from A to B
c) I own it outright

You're quite right Rikkor, I wasn't among the cool kids at school - a mind of your own was a bit of a bar to entry to that particular club, then as now. It didn't bother me then and it still doesn't. I see my 12-year old daughter submitting to the tyranny of cool now and it rather upsets me.

People are perfectly at liberty to play the game of 'my car/house/girlfriend/whatever is better than yours nyah nyah'. That's what makes the world economy go round, at the end of the day. Just try and deal with the fact that not everyone wants to play it.

There seems to be some confusion over my comment, I don't want people getting the wrong impression so would just like to clarify that I only try to put people in the back seat if the boot is already full.

And thanks rikkor, I took your advice and got my height verified, turns out I'm only 5'4", it's just that I look bigger close up. This has come as something of a shock but does explain why I don't struggle for leg or headroom, and why I get odd looks when asking for extra long trousers.
