There was growing suspicion today that David Cameron was beginning to crack under the pressure of the General Election after a bizarre rant on BBC2's Newsnight in which he claimed he would "love it" if the Conservatives beat Labour on May 6th.

"He's got no right to say that!" roared the Tory Leader, in response to questioning on Lord Mandleson's statement earlier that Labour ‘Wouldn’t have to try as hard’ if Mr. Cameron was leading them, "There's some things you just don't say and I tell you now, if we beat them on May the 6th I'll Love it, just love it!" he declared pointing wildly at the camera.

Gordon Brown said today that now it was "squeaky bum time" the pressure was clearly getting to the Tories.

As the Big Two battled it out for top spot the Liberal Democrats were refusing to accept that finishing third was the only option. "There's a few big debating fixtures left and at this stage in the contest everything's a cup final for us really" said Vince Cable. However he acknowledged that finishing third would still get them into Europe, which had always been the main target.

At the other end of the election table, UKIP and the National Front continued to fight it out for survival. Joining the current wave of popularity for 'scrappage' schemes, UKIP announced they would take two immigrant infants and would give the parents a nice new British orphan to adopt in return. The National Front offered a more direct offering, whereby they would scrap Black and Asian people full stop. Both parties though recognized they were in a fight for survival. "We've got 4 weeks to go" said a determined Nick Griffin "for us, every door we knock on is an electoral six pointer".

Meanwhile the controversy over the Chancellor’s debate showed no signs of dwindling. Channel Four maintained it had been quite right to allow just three minutes of extra debating time during the heated exchange at the end, to the fury of Alistair Darling who accused the corporation of being 'Conservative to the Core'. "I've got to be careful what I say" he told Sky's Adam Boulten "but whenever we come here you know the majority of the major decisions have already been made. I mean Vince Cable was off to the toilet for at least 5 minutes, and there were the ad breaks. Three minutes ? We were robbed, I’m amazed John Snow didn’t share the taxi home with them the blind bastard ."
