"This is all very nice, but to be honest I don't see what all the fuss is about."
said Mark Jones, who was today crowned BBC Young Musician of the year today after a thrilling trumpet 'Blow off' tie breaker, which took place in a packed Albert hall and was broadcast live to a rapt BBC4 audience of tens of thousands.
"I just enjoyed playing, so read up a bit and tried out a couple of new things now and again, as you do, but entering this competition was really just an excuse to put off my A level French revision for as long as possible, if I'm honest." said the
the bewildered 17 year old comprehensive 6th form pupil from Middlesbrough, who beat off stiff competition from established music acadamies and private schools up and down the country to lift the prestigious trophy.
"He sounded very nice!" said a proud Mrs Jones. "though this is something of a surprise, since I've never actually heard him play before."
"When he said he was off up to his room to practice his trumpet, I just naturally assumed that he meant that he was masturbating, so thought nothing of it."
A slightly tense exchange took place when News of his sons triumph were relayed to Mark's bewildered Father.
"Frankly I'm flabbergasted" commented Simon Jones, on being told the news of his son's achievement. "I've got nothing against homosexualists mind... but my son has such a prominent chin? So I never thought..."
"Your so old fashioned Dad!", interjected Mark wryly...
"Remember that fit cellist with the neurotic mother who stormed off at the interval? Been trying to work an angle all through the heats? Well I reckon I've got my 'in' now. Happy?" before hugging his tearful and joyous father for the first time in 10 years.
