After reading the Facebook profile of Harrogate shop assistant Jane Walker, which described her as "single" and "interested in men", friend and admirer James Burns made a move on her in the kitchen of her birthday party, and was told she was "sort of seeing someone". Two weeks later, Walker was shocked to be contacted by the ASA, who upheld Burns' complaint and found her relationship status "should not be repeated in its current state".

According to the ASA, the claims on Walker's profile "could not be substantiated" and "are likely to mislead a reasonable person", although the ASA admit that in this case they didn't.

The ASA also took issue with several lines from Walker's profile, noting that she lists 'reading' under 'activities', and Kurt Vonnegut and Charles Dickens as her favourite authors. However, an independent investigation reveals she actually sits about watching Take Me Out.

Walker is unavailable for comment, and has changed her online profile to tone down the claims. Under legal advice, she has also uploaded a less flattering profile photo.
