Police have arrested two men after they tried to take the body of a dead colleague on to a plane at Heathrow Airport.

Staff became suspicious when they tried to check in 59-year-old Gordon Brown, who was looking his usual cheerful self, for a flight to Glasgow on Thursday.

The men – Peter (Voldermort) Mandleson and Alistair Darling - said they thought he was asleep.

They were arrested on suspicion of failing to give notification of a death of a career, police said.

The pair, who used to work with the deceased man, have been released on bail until 1 June.

It is understood they bundled Mr Brown to the airport in a chauffer driven car.

'Moving and breathing'

Asked to describe his late colleague, who she called Cheerful Charlie, Dark Lord Mandleson said: "He thought he was going to be Prime Minister.

"I really admired Gordon’s ability to delude himself."

Mr Brown's Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling added: "I am amazed that we got away with this for as long as we did. Is everyone blind? Gordon’s been dead in the water for months."

Darling added, "In a way it’s a relief, he’s been stinking the place up for ages."

A member of staff at The House of Commons, who asked not to be named, confirmed the chauffer had taken the men to an airport but declined to comment further.
